I would think it would be Illegal, the TSA would take it from your buddy. But a phone call would find out, call the Airline, or TSA and ask. Also any liquid over 50cc, or is it ML, can't remember, will be confiscated.
That's why they don't sell mercury filled Manometers in the USA any more.

Well, I called my buddy, and he's making a trip to Oklahoma City next week, which is 100 miles from me. That's a lot less than 250 miles, so I'll drive over and pick it up from him there.

Do you think he'll have a problem getting it through airport security as a carry on? Since it's too long to fit in those overhead bins, I figure he can just wedge it between the seats to keep it upright so the mercury doesn't spill.

Keep in mind that mercury is actually a metal, so metal detectors will spot it. The only way to ship it without risk of being caught is to identify yourself as a medical supplies vendor and explain that it is a used rectal thermometer for people with 4 A-holes. At that point, no one will ask you to unwrap the package.

Ed,

I was just teasing about the airport. Nebr_Rex has been wrapped a little tight since he weighed in here, so I decided to tweak him a little. As I figured, he couldn't resist the bait.

My buddy is actually driving to Oklahoma City from Dallas. He'll hang it from his clothes bar, so it'll be upright, and should be OK.

When it's all said and done, I'll have it next week for 10 bucks, a little more than half a tank of gas, and the dinner I'll buy for my friend.

For that, I end up with a Motion Pro tool and a nice dinner with a buddy I don't get to see too often. Also, I got to torque Nebr_Rex's ass a little tighter in the process.

All in all, I think that's a pretty good deal.

I knew you were kidding; I understood your tongue in cheek about the overhead or wedging it between the seats. I just thought I'd add my rather weak little joke. :)

Well, maybe my sense of humor needs a little work, too. I didn't catch that the first time I read it. Once I reread it, it's funny as hell.
