Motion Pro Tool Find and Challenges

So, I was searching for a manometer, and found a Motion Pro Tool that was only used once (he said) for 10 bucks!

The guy sent me these pics:







So, the price is sure right, but it's in Dallas, and I'm in Tulsa. 250 miles from me, and the guy doesn't want to ship it.

I call a buddy of mine to see if he can go by and grab it and ship it to me. He picked it up a few hours ago.



He is concerned, though about "the mercury leaking out".



He says those hoses are open on one end, and if they tip over, the mercury will leak out. This seems odd to me, but never having actually had my hands on a Motion Pro Tool before, I'm not sure I'm understanding exactly what he's talking about. Understand that he is not much of a motorhead.

Does what he's saying make sense to anyone? If so, how do we resolve it so he can ship this jewel to me?

the mercury ones are good , he's being a pussy, they're shipped with the merc why cant they be re-shipped??/. I got a merc sync tool from saber Cycle and the Merc was shipped in a little plastic bottle, tell him to put it in a bottle, make sure he includes dampers,

OK, I think "pussy" might be a little strong for a guy who is trying to do a friend a favor and is trying to figure out something he knows nothing about. I don't blame him for being cautious, I'm concerned, too.

If I understand the way this works correctly, these are shipped with the mercury separate from the gauge, and you put the mercury in it to use it?

To anyone who has one; how do you store the gauge (and the mercury) when it's not in use? Do you just pour it back in the bottle? I'm assuming it's not meant to be just exposed to the air, able to drip out if it's upended.

What about simply sealing the ends of the hoses with small bolts, pushed in past the threads so nothing could leak past?

Is there some other type of plug to use if screws are no good? I've used a screw to seal a broken vacuum hose on a car, and air didn't leak through. Would mercury?

OK, looking at the Motion Pro website, they only show the SynchPro, which uses a non-mercury fluid. I assume this is an older model, that still uses mercury?

Mercury sticks are to be stored hanging in vertical position
just like when they are in use.
Mercury sticks are no longer sold new.
They should NOT be shipped because it will create a bio-hazard.

Can you tell me what "mercury sticks" are?

That's what I though, but I wanted to be sure.

If you had one of these, how would you store it between uses? Wouldn't you put some sort of cap in the ends of the hoses to prevent accidental spillage?

Go talk to your Post Master about shipping mercury.

Don't be sending Mercury in the Mail, you will not enjoy the Huge fine, possible to be charged for clean up and hazardous material handling.
Then it could get ugly if you can't afford to pay the tab, DNPG-GDTJ!

Well, I called my buddy, and he's making a trip to Oklahoma City next week, which is 100 miles from me. That's a lot less than 250 miles, so I'll drive over and pick it up from him there.

Do you think he'll have a problem getting it through airport security as a carry on? Since it's too long to fit in those overhead bins, I figure he can just wedge it between the seats to keep it upright so the mercury doesn't spill.
