carb problems...locked up

well i need to go buy some....i went outside and the floats are moving but 3 are stiff. i sprayed some wd.....but the butterfly valve moves a 1/8th inch and then stops.....

What year 1000LTD. they changed quite a bit from year to year. Insert your bike particulars into your profile signature and you will no longer have to answer this question. Make sure you include all the bike extras, such as aftermarket ignitions, coils, carburetors and so on.

This is what is confusing, you say "butterfly valve and than you say that it is a 79LTD. They did not have carburetors with "butterfly valves" They had VM26 or VM28 (I forget which) manual slide carburetors. Butterfly carbs were not until the BS34 carbs were introduced on the "J" series motors in 1981.

He mentioned 78 as the year a few posts back

7-77 was the tag on the frame, and down the list there is the carbs, look like VM's not BS's.

That was what I was presuming, that is why I showed him those rebuild kits. 7/77 should be a 77LTD I believe that the 78s would have started in 9/77. The tag should give him the particular model or we can tell by the VIN. But he keeps on saying "butterfly valves. That is what is throwing me. Maybe someone before him changed the carbs to BS stile.

It would help a lot if another picture of the carbs was posted, the one in his other is of a stack of parts with the carbs in view, look like VM's.

yeah the title says its a 78. maybe its wrong? heres some pics with the top and bottom off because im trying to clean them. later i will go get some carb cleaner and let them soak. they have a black almost tar substance on them and in them. the last time it was on the road was 2006. then when i got it last week for free, it was in parts.


the only float that moves freely is the 1 on the right.

you can see in a few pics the black shiny sticky residue.

OK I went back to find out the particulars of this bike.


The frame is a KZ1000-A2 (1978). The front and rear wheels are from a 79 or 80 bike, and the seat is from an LTD. I think that the seat and wheels are what throws us. We should treat this bike as a custom 78 A2 1000. Those carbs look like the stock VM26 carbs with the side adjusting screws like on the 77 bikes the 78 bikes had the bottom adjusting pilot screws. This would mean that the rebuild kit he requires is this one.
