82 CSR 1000, removed air box for pod filters

I have a 82 CSR 1000, I pulled the air box off of it and put individual foam pod filters on each carb, now I can hardly get it to start and when I do it runs like shit. I was curious if anyone else has done this? I'm thinking i need to put a jet kit in it, but just wanted some more input. any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

You will have to rejet for pods I think 140 main jets and 40 pilot jets.. Do you run open or baffeled exhaust ?

NOOOooooooooooooooo...... :P

Anyways, YES, the jetkit is an excellent source of frustration relief and headache prevention.

The BS34 CV carbs dont actually need the pilots changed out for pod filters, just a serious mixture adjustment.

There will be some flat spot/issues in the low rpm range without a steeper tapered needle, and main jet+needle position changes/experimentation are required. This also depends on the condition of each cylinder as pods makes jetting much more sensative.

I've seen requirements anywhere in between:
Pilots: 37.5 - 40
Needles: (jet kit supplied taper) #2 - #4 clip position
Mains: 135 - 170 (Oiled/non-oiled, cheap to K&N filters)

JETKIT!! YES...come with nice instructions plus tools...

I put pods on my 82 Kz1000 LTD, and used a stage 3 jet kit that helped a lot. The kit came with drill bits, so I left the shop install the jets. My friends warned me that if I slipped with the drill I would have major problems. You still have to get the air mixture right and sync them.
I am wondering if I should change the timing since I also put on Vance & Hines drag pipes with an 8 inch baffle stuffed into them.

This bike has the exact same setup. .420 lift cammed, 1150, 11.5:1 The carbs have new needles, 135 main jets and stock 37.5 pilots. Slides are modified. pods are EMGO 12-55754, bought at Z1E. I would put these carbs against any VM33 equipped bike of same displacement and compression.

Lots of people with Pod's and lots without. I'd save the airbox and fittings until I was real happy with the Pod's, seems there are always someone looking for 1 to go back to the box setup.

I can't understand the attraction of pods. They not only hopelessly screw up the running but you lose the rear support for the carbs which will make the intake manifolds fail eventually. I don't get it.

I can see the attraction to pods, the factory air box is not very attrative. Especially if you are building a chopper or bobber. My bike came with pods but I have heard so many horror stories about them that I did not want to use them. It took me a while to figure out what to do, but I ended up fabricating my own intake manifold. I will post some pics tomorrow. It works very well and looks cool too.

well I can.It is an absolute beouthch to get the stock air cleaner box out if u want to work on the carbs,so lots of folks put pods on so they wont have to screw with the stock box.Me, Im old and slow and got plenty of time so removing the box is ok by me.I did stick a K and N filter in mine which is sort of a half-arze compromise I guess.Lol.bj

How about a massive performance increase. Pods will add quite a bit of extra umph.
