After using it to synch the throttle plates at ~1700 rpm, I drop it back down to idle and adjust each idle mix screw until the gauge levels out again. My method may not be condoned by pros, but my idle to rev transition is virtually seemless, whereas before it was quite stumbly. It seems to me that this can be used to compensate for a/multiple cylinders that aren't contributing as well, at least at idle. Considering slight valve sealing issues become less problematic at higher rpm's. I did this on my GS1100 and it is great.

A pic for curious minds, is this something that anyone has done a DIY project on? I would be happy to go over it.

Hey man, I bought a set off ebay the other week. They were the dial gauges, but the seller wasin Oklahoma I believe, selling brand new guages (sets of 4) and they were only $57 after shipping.
I tuned my bike following the manual and it seemed easy enough.
Here's the seller (sabercycle) and one of the guages.

Everywhere else was $76+

sticks or gauges will work on any multi cylinder engine they all do exactly the same job. reading vacuam thats all they do.

True but there has to be a vacuum port on each cylinder to connect to. If you have 33 smooth bores, for example, you can't use anything to synch them that I know of. (The larger intake rubbers don't have ports and the carbs don't either).

I also second that synching makes a huge difference in performance. Idles better, sounds better, much smoother. I have an older Motion Pro mercury gage that works well.

The one on the XS site is easy enough. What I like about the actual manometer style is that you can hook into all 4 or 3 or 2, however many cylinders you have, all at once and watch them relative to each other. The liquid ones are nice as well because it the viscosity of the medium really cuts down on fluctuations, especially if you have a reducer built into the line. You only get a small sample of the vacuum. Still the same measurement, be it mm/Hg, or "/H2O, just not able to give the volume to create massive fluctuations.

Brilliant minds think alike I see. And amazingly cost effective. Yours must be a pic with the engine running, eh? What kind of fluid did you use?
