From the diagram, the float seems to be installed with the float indentations on the top when carbs are in normal operating position.
Another matter is that each float needle should always remain with its same seat. Getting the needle mixed up and reinstalled with a different seat invites fuel leakage.
Good Fortune!

Just like pattons picture above.
So if the carb is off the bike and upside down in your hand, then the round part of the float is facing up.

If you look at the floats you should see the tang that the needle pushes against, then another Tang which is the float drop tang. This tang will let the float hang down so fuel can enter with the Carb upright. So this Tang should hit the Carb Body at the float tower, that's were the pivot pin slides in. Use a book and set the float level on the bench to get it in the correct ballpark, I would buy some kits and do them right or you'll most likely be pulling them off again for a restricted low speed circuit.

In addition to all the great advice above .... one other suggestion.
I had similar problem this spring. Took the carbs off last November, cleaned them out and replaced the float needles and when I put them back on the bike a month ago I had gas coming out 2 of the 4 overflows. To make a very long and frustrating story short my needle seats were dirty. They cleaned up well with some Brasso on a Q tip and wallah ! no more leaks
