Anyone know what the float height is for a KZ750 4 cylinder? I cleaned my carbs, but I'm still leaking fuel and the motor won't rev above 3k, so I'm guessing the floats are set wrong.

If fuel is still leaking, clean the float valves and the brass fuel jet seats with chrome polish. They should be shiney and new when your done.

If the bike wont rev past 3k, your float levels would have to be completely screwed, not just off by a bit.
i suspect you have another issue...

Are you sure that the needles have been installed correctly/correct clip position?
The main jets are clean and installed correctly?

Do you have stock air filter/box, or are you running pods?

The stock float height is usually 2 - 3mm below the fuel bowl gasket.

REMEMBER! - NO MATTER AIRBOX OR PODS, EVERYTHING MUST BE COMPLETELY SEALED AIR TIGHT, from air filtration to exhaust end!

Make sure the advancer is properly lubricated with some light oil.

GL!

I replaced the needles with new ones and the seats are fairly clean, but I'll clean them out some more just to be sure.

Needles should be in the correct position, they were installed in the same position as the previous owner had them, and he said he had the bike running down the road last season.

Stock filter and airbox, although on closer inspection, I noticed that the air filter is missing. I'll order one of those. I also noticed that I was missing two of the vacuum plugs on the carbs, so I'll order those too.

When you say 2-3 mm below the bowl gasket, do you mean from the top or the bottom of the floats?

What do you mean by the advancer?

Missing vacuum plugs will surely screw up the running of your bike. Go to the auto parts store and cap them off then see how she runs before you pull the carbs back off

Carbs are already back off, figured I'd double check float height and all that. Plus I don't want to run it without an air filter.

Could missing two of those plugs make that big of a difference? I've never working with vacuum leaks on bikes before but I know on cars it'll usually only make a rough idle, and not cause problems at higher rpm when the throttle is open.

Those caps are very very important to her running right. That was probably your problem. You are right about not running it without a filter too.

By the way how are you setting the floats? The way the manual says or the clear tube method?

I hadn't set the floats yet since I didn't know the height. I don't have a manual yet, either. When I cleaned them out I just looked across them and made sure they were all at the same height, which I hoped was correct.

Kawickrice is right on - those little vacuum caps are really important.

You probably have the same carbs (Keihin CV34) as me. There is no spec for float height. There is a spec for fuel level. The floats should be set so that the level of fuel in the bowl is 4 +/- 1mm below the joint between float bowl and carb body. The way to check is to connect a clear tube to the drain nipple, hold it up alongside the carb body and open the drain screw. The tube should fill to show you the level in the bowl. To be honest I have never measured exact # of mm. At about the tip of the bowl screw is usually good enough. It is trial and error and can be a bit of a pain to do but float height is notoriously innacurate. Do a search here on clear tube method.

You may be able to find a shop manual on www.mbsween.com

Ok, thanks, I'll double check that while I'm waiting on my parts to arrive. I also picked up some vacuum caps today, so that won't be a problem anymore.

This thing is driving me nuts. The seats are clean and have no visible corrosion or anything. The needles are brand new. The fuel level is where it should be. Carb 2 is still dripping, and now for some reason carb 1 is leaking like crazy. Any ideas or helpful tips?

The clear tube method is a good, quick indicator of the float level.Just make sure the bike is on the center stand and fairly level.A question is,is the carb leaking from the bowl/body connection or out of the throttle valve/throat area?If it's coming out of the throttle valve/throat area, then the float needle either is not sealing OR the float level is too high.If it's coming from the body/bowl connection,it's a bad gasket/"O"-ring.BTW,on the tube, yes, the level should be about a nickel's thickness below the bowl/body connection.OH-when you do the tube check-do 1 at a time, and keep the fuel petcock on prime, that way the fuel will keep flowing thru the petcock, giving you a good indicator of where everything is at.
