petcock was created by csrjoe
have 1983 csr 650, just brought 10 days ago. there was problaly a quater of a tank in it yesterday, put in almost full tank in yesterday and this morning alot of gas on the garage floor not puddles but enough to freak me out. I check the petcock to make sure it was the way the previous owner told it was off. which is straight up and down (12 to 6 o'clock) but still its dripping from where the chain goes into motor, underneath the mufflers. check under all carbs no gas. the petcock is new by the way. Is there an overflow line for the tank? I havent gotten a manual yet for the bike so I'm in the dark, Oh ya does anyone have suggest on how to neutualize gas on a cement floor. Thanks for any HELP

Try putting kitty litter on it and let it sit for a day or two...Russ

If the petcock is a vacuum deal then you should have the lever sitting to the left and right not up and down. See if you have a vacuum line coming from the engine side of the carbs to the back of the petcock.

For confirmation...

Disconnect the fuel line off the carb, and find out which arm orientation is what...

You'll also want to insure the petcock does indeed shut off... ;)

Howdy. Do you have the Owner's Manual for the bike?
Just in case... it may be in the pull-down compartment on the underside of the seat.
Referencing the OM from the 83 650-CSR...
The stock petcock is RES-PRI-ON...
RES is to the left (9pm). PRI is at the 6 o'clock position. ON is to the right (3pm).

So, maybe you don't have the stock petcock or the bike isn't an 83 model.

It may be time to rebuild the petcock or replace it.
FYI: a new 2005 KZ1000-Police unit should bolt-on to your tank.
(info from using the cross-reference & supersession data at Kawasaki.com).
Z1Enterprises.com may have a kit for it: either oem or K&L. If you don't see either/or, or you'd like the a new one from the Police bike, contact them w your needs

It might be a good idea to make sure it's functioning properly. RES & ON should function in the same manner - no fuel flow when the bike is off. PRI should flow fuel. You need to make sure it's working right, since there's a possibility of oil contamination - remove the oil filler cap & check for the odor of gasoline in the engine.
