I actually bought that one. The problem is that it doesn't fit (not even close) and appears to be quite different from what is pictured in the service manual, although I'll grant you that those pictures kind of suck.

So I'm kind of stumped on this one.

1980 Kawasaki KZ440B (brand new eBaby)
1998 Ducati 900S (gone)
1978 BMW R100S (gone, damn it)
1975 Yamaha RD350 cafe (gone)
1986 Yamaha XJ650 Seca (gone)
1981 Kawasaki KZ440LTD (gone)
1969 HD Sportster (gone :)
1966 Honda CB160 (gone, damn it)
1965 Suzuki 80

Do it right or don't bother doing it at all.

?!?! Which one did you buy? The one for the 82 model or the one for the 81 model. Did you check the diagrams at Kawasaki.com first?

You probably have to get an airbox that's specific to the 80-81 440-Standard.
(assuming the bike is an 81 440-B2).

Air filter assy: 11010-1072
KZ440-B1 (1980)
KZ440-B2 (1981

Supersession: Air filter assy: 11010-1053

You'll have to do some searching to see what model would have the superceded air filter. I'd guess a KZ400 - just a guess.
(note: Air filter assy = Airbox assy)

Here's the info for the 1978 KZ400-Standard Airbox:

Air filter assy: 11010-1066
KZ400-B1 (1978)
KZ400-B2 (1979)
KZ400-C1 (1978)

This airbox assy appears very similar to the 80-81 KZ440-Standard unit. It has the same cap & air filter element. However, the airbox ducts are different, so the airbox holes may not be the same. I have no idea if it'll work on your bike.

I tried to add a pic - it was the wrong one - tried to edit to add the correct pic since KZR wouldn't upload the wrong one - couldn't add the correct pic because the attach image option was no longer available. %#$%@#^@^@%^$@%&$%@^%!#$%!%!%@#$^^$%&$&$&@#^^@$&$%&$%^.

Yep. As it turns out the box that I acquired was from an LTD. I suppose that it could be jerry rigged to work, but it's missing a couple of key bits. The line drawing that you provided are the best that I've seen. So, the first rule of restoration (shop carefully and patiently0 was violated, and the fault is entirely my own. Thanks.

The only difference that I can see between the '78-'79 box and the '80-'81 B box is the use of an adjustable band on the earlier boots. The newer box secures them to the carbs with a kind of spring thingy that reminds me of my kid's hair bands. At any rate, I found a complete version of this one, so I guess I'll find out.

The diagrams are readily available at Kawasaki.com.

As mentioned, the airbox duct holes might be of a different size.

32mm on the 400 and 36mm on the 440 would raise that possibility. The pod vendors seem to claim that the 32mm's are bigger, although the intake boot sizes are apparently identical. Again, I guess I'll find out and if I've screwed up, maybe the boots can be modified. Once more, thanks for your help.
