Can't get the #$%@#%@#$% Carbs off! was created by Trebek
I am in the process of replacing my carbs on my kz650. I've unbolted everything that the manual says to, but the 30 year old rubber boots leading to the engine and airbox is as hard as a bowling ball.
Hopefully I don't have to break out the saw.:woohoo:

You might try a sharp wood chisel and kind of cut through them....Russ

remove the 10mm bolts that hold air box to frame should give enough slack to remove carbs or if you have a heat gun you can soften the boots for a short time but its kinda of a pain

If they are that hard don't torture yourself, just cut them off with a hacksaw and order new ones from Z-1 Ent. When you have to put them back on you'll be glad you did.

New ones may be the best way to go, but I've used a hair dryer and/or a bowl of hot water to soften the rubber boots up enough to make them flexible. Just be careful you aren't putting leaking fuel onto a red-hot hair dry (sorry for stating the obvious).

+1 on all the advice...
If they're that hard the odds of them leaking when you reinstall the carbs are very very very very good.
I'd take a heat gun to them to soften them up enough to spit the carbs out and then order a fresh set straight away to put on before you put the carbs back on.

Excellent advice all. I'll order new ones and cut the old ones off with a hacksaw. I'm sure I'll have more questions, since I've never replaced a carb bank before.

I messed with my old ones and actually melted one in the microwave trying to soften it up. New ones are like night and day. Install carbs and then feed boots thru air box onto carbs. I ordered fesh new shiny spring clamps for them too!

Should I get the new airbox boots or the rubber that goes to the intake? I really can't afford both right now.

If you can only get one set, my vote would be the airbox hoses. You can install the carbs, then feed the hoses through the airbox and install them with the carbs on.
