Hey all,

Now before you all get your big girl panties in a bind :P , I realize not every motor is going to be the same due to elevations, regional temperatures, head/valve work, intakes, vacuums, carb size, exhaust etc....

Anyone out there with similar setup...

Motor upgraded to 1015cc.
Cams: WebCam .365 lift, 283 duration, 246 duration @ .050
Head: Valve 3 way grind with port & polish via Cavanaugh Racing Heads.
Carbs: Keihin, 29mm CR specials, Dynoman Filter PODs
Kerker 4 to 1 exhaust with 1.5" competition baffle.
Dyna S electronic ignition and coils.

AZ Emission Test Measurement:
The test is basically only an idle test. They have you at idle for ~ 15 seconds for a first reading then they have you up the rpm to 2500 for ~ 15 seconds and back to idle for a second reading.

Hydrocarbons (HC) in PPM: Standard is 1800: Pass @ 1145
Carbon Monoxide (CO) in %: Standard is 5.50: First idle was 7.91, Second Failed @ 8.12

Curious what you ended up in jetting for passing emissions in your area... Especially for those of you in CA.....

Thanks,

We don't have emission testing for bikes here in CA. They are talking about it but if they do it will be for probably '90 and newer only. I'm a mechanic so just for fun I might go see my smog guy and do "your" tast and see if my bike would pass AZ standards...

...

Hell, I would have thought CA would do to all the EPA and tree hugging ways of thinking out there....

NOTE: I was born and raised in Northern Cal....

see my smog guy and do "your" tast and see if my bike would pass AZ standards

If possible, that would be cool to know.... Thanks!

If it were me, I would add some fuel injector cleaner to the gas, a lot more than the can says per gallon, and take it back, it will change the fuel make up enough to make it pass.

Based on my settings, I changed the clip position to 3 and have ordered smaller slow jets (58's versus 60) to lean her out from idle to 1/4 and clip position 3 (leaner ops) for 1/4 to 3/4 ranges....

For 3/4 plu I have gone from a 120 to 115 main jet.

I was just curious what otherrs have come across in their configurations.

I was trying to access the abate site for more info:

www.abate.org/

but this what I found for California:

Introduced in the Senate in late February, SB 435 targets bikes with illegally modified exhaust systems and would go into effect in 2012 if passed and signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, an avid motorcyclist. Biennial smog checks would be required for motorcycles manufactured in the 2000 model year and later under a bill making its way through the California Legislature

OMR you won't cheat the CO measurment so easily. The later model Kaws had reed valves in the valve covers to pull fresh air into the exhaust to combust the CO into CO2 as well as combust unburnt hydrocarbons. Lots of engine manufacturers did this in the 80's. The idea wasn't dillution, it was to facilitate combustion in the hot exhaust headers we now have catalytic converts adn better engine management controls and don't us air injection today. You could cheat, by running super, super lean, or possibly adding NOS might work just for the purposes for cheating an emmissons test. Some way to blow fresh air into the exhaust would work too. Here is one idea. Plug the jets in two carburators, that way two cylinders would be pumping air. The problem is getting there and back would be terrible, unless you bring it in the back of a truck... I'm just thinking here.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

Oh and BTW guys the reasong they care about CO is becasue the EPA classified it as hazardous to humans. Just last month the EPA classified CO2 as hazardous to humans. So things are about to get a lot worse.

OMR, you could try burning a mixtrure of 50% alchol and 50% gasoline, just for the purposes of your test. IF you can jet the bike rich enough to run. Again just thinking...

Well, I'm good to go.... passed with flying colors!

There's actually a funny story to it....

As mentioned, drop to number 3 on the needle jet clip and I installed the 58 slow jets this afternoon.

In using the color tune, due to the 58's, goes from yellow .5 turn out to bunson blue at 1.5 turns out.... So 1 to 1.25 turns out (half way between the two is about correct ...

With this in mind, I tweaked her out as far as possible, popping out the pipe so backed her out about 1/8th turn....

Drive to emissions, ran like shit lol, where they have you shut her down then start her up for idle test.
SOB wouldn't start so I had my screw driver and oh no, you can't do that... Ok, so went for the choke, oh no you can't do that... WTF you sonsabitch...

Ok, if I roll it out of the bay, make my tweaks and come back... She replies, No problem! ROFLMFAO.... So for emissions, 2.75 turns out will do it...

Out the bay I go.... Tweak her back about 1/4 turn, adjust the idle and back into the bay I go... Old girl flew through with no problems...

As mentioned, CO% Standard is 5.5%.... Measured in at 2.80% SWEET!!!!

Once out the bay, tweaked her back to 1.25 turns out and took her for a drive... Twist the throttle and she screams nicely with no back fire... I'll keep my eye on the plugs.....

Anyhoot.... Thanks again all...

For future reference....

Kehins CR Specials:

Main Jet: 115
Slow Jet: 58
Needle Jet position # 3:
Pilot adjust 2.75 turns out for emissions.....
