I noticed a few of you have Suzuki GS1150s. I am interested in using the same BS36 carbs on my hand built GPz1150. Can anyone tell me anything about them. Are they better than the standard BS34s which came on all the Kaws. I have two sets of these which I bought just for this use. Even though my engine is quite well hopped up, I want to stay with CV carbs. I ride this to work every day in the summer 80 Mi. so I want something that will still keep a reasonable fuel millage at modest riding and is also maintenance free. I just figured if a GS1150 head can use them with some semblance of efficiency a well ported 84 GPz head could use them too.

they should work quite well back in the day everybody just seemed to take them off because it seemed to be the thing to do and keihn cr's 33mm or35mm seemed to be the carb of choice. i think the only reason they changed them out was because some racers where using them and it was harder to get jetting for them at the time.

The reason I want to use these carbs is because CVs are still the best way to go for the street. When I think that I have the standard VMs on my stock KZ900 and can only get about 36mpg at best, but I can pull almost 48 mpg out of my GPz1100 with bs34s and loose no performance. There must be something to it. I also have two sets of VM33s which I can always swap out if I want to go racing.

Anyone els with some input about these carbs. I know that they are not true 36s, because the oval ventury in the mid section is 30mm wide and 35mm tall and not a true clean hole but the sweep area is still quite a bit bigger than the original 34s that Kawasaki uses.

Hey man,
Caught your message on the other thread. I don't really know a LOT about them...wish I did. I have the same ideas about them that you do; so I have been watching them on eBay and they normally go for no less than a hundred (but there is always that rare 'steal' of a deal on occassion) and sometimes they go for quite a bit more. I also think they would be a real good option for your bike.

Additionally, you might look at the 36mm/38mm gixxer carbs; they have the propper spacing and I know that guys use them on their GSs and CB-Fs (albeit with modified intake boots, or moving the rails for CB use). The gixxer carbs come in (I believe) 36mm and 38mm flavors; I don't know if the early generation models had 34s or not...I think they only went as small as 36 but I'm not a gixxer-guy. I wish I knew more...BTW, nice bike.

another set of 36 cv's that your might want to look at as well are the stock carbs on fj 11-1200 yamaha's a really good freind of mine used a set on a 1428 car tire drag bike that ran low 9's at over 150 mph just because people said it wouldn't work i'll tell you what they impressed the hell out of me and i know there are alot of sets of those around since that was the motor of choice in the legend car series so there are alot of extras around. and also lots of jet kits and experiance setting them up.

The Suzuki carbs are definitely not a direct drop in. They are about .5" too wide end to end. To remount them will also not be simple the individual carb bodies are too large also. If you but them up against each other side by side, they are still too large to fit the outside two cylinder spacing. I have already ruined a set by machining off too much material, and breaking threw into the vacuum chamber. This is why I bought three sets when I could I figured I would wind up with four good carb bodies out of the twelve. At this point in time hoever I am not sure, it might take sixteen. By the time I will be done these will cost me well over a grand:huh:    I am known as a determined individual and in one way or another I will make these BS36s work. There must be a reason there were dubbed "BS"

for a grand you could have almost bought a set of e-bay 29 mm smoothbores just about right they were only 1300.00

I have a set of those. I want a good set of CV carbs that will be as good or better than a set of 29/33 smooth bores.:S

Here are a couple of pictures of the problem. The gap you see between the vacuum dome is what it is stock on the GS1150 I have to get these 3mm closer.

I think you clearly know more about this than I do. Here is a thought: I see the CB-F guys modifying their intake boots (in some way) to make the carbs fit. Perhaps - with some imagination and drive - there is a solution with the intake boot area.

PS> It is good to know that they are not direct drop ins!
