I used white tape here:
It actually was just mushy and seemed ready to leak. When I took off the petcock the two screws holding the faceplate were loose and the rubber diaphragm inside was damaged. That is where it was leaking. I've got the replacement part from Z1. I'm going to try that Permatex on the threads. I just remembered something, a sealer called Hylomar Blue that someone mentioned was good for fuel use.

I thought fuel pipes on the carburetors were being discussed. I use regular teflon tape on the petcock where it screws into the adapter plate. ResTape Yellow Gas Thread-Seal Yellow Tape is good to use with gasoline or gasohol according to their product fact sheet. I haven't tried it but may get some and give it a try.

yellow tef tape is common here in cali in folks tool boxes and my earlier post and refs was for consruction ....not motorcycles...rector seal or tfe paste is also what i use now for my occasional jobs with gas..water(not on bikes) ... it saves having to wrap threads and can get aroung tight to the wall jobs better than a role a tape...it also conforms to the threads and bends and shapes of stuff nice..i use it on both pieces prior to assmb......ect...i get it at home depot for 6.00 and will last me a lifetime for radom use
giving guys a good will heads up tip is hard sometimes on this site...even if its just to hear what others think of your suggestion ..some lack tact in correcting peoples blunders ...i give public group tours for fun at pt.sur state park and light station....when i hear info from another VOLUNTEER that is iffy i don't cut em a new one... and the folks that override people all the time just to be right and let every one know it....are no fun and the public totally pull me aside later in the tour and comment about the jerk....we call em sharpshooters...and try and pick weekends to sign up when they are not signed up to help on the tours so we can have fun and share our hobby with cool people....my 2 cents...peace

Teflon thread tape is only suitable for NPT (pipe or tapered threads)
North american color codes are as follows, other parts of the world use different colors. Yellow is always for natural gas.
White tape is a general purpose tape most often used for plumbing.
Yellow is for natural gas, almost the exact same thing as white except that it is rated and tested for use on natural gas lines in enclosed spaces. Many gas inspectors will not allow the use of any other teflon tape.
Green tape is used for oxygen, both breathing oxygen systems and say an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. Same as gas tape it is rated and tested for oxygen use.
Red tape is used on high temperature lines, usually steam lines
A hard to find blue tape is used for potable water lines EX - in a camper.
Thats what I know from my work experiences... I am a Journeyman gas fitter.
