I found a set of supposedly 29 smoothbores from a friend and have a couple of questions. How can I tell what they are?, are there any numbers to check? I plan on putting them on my 77 1000. Thanks for any help.

Could compare with pics in Z1E's carb info section. :)

And perhaps post some pics here in this thread for us to see and advise about. ;)

Good Luck! :)

Guess that would mean they are either 29's, or 28's :)

The early Z1 28mm carburetors are best identified by the combination of 17mm drain plug directly under the main jet,

Z1 link in my last post.

And from the same link.

Mikuni 29mm smoothbore carbs

The top of the carb is identical to the 26mm (and later KZ1000 28mm) carbs. The float bowl went back to using the 17mm drain plug directly under the main jet. Great for racers as it allowed for quick changes of the main jet. None of the VM29's have an overflow pipe fitted in the float bowl.

l Note: some very early sets of 29mm smoothbore carbs have a float bowl with a small drain screw angled to the side.

the zi 28mm carbs had two screws holding down the top caps the 29 smoothbores look very similar to stock late model carbs [26 or 28mm] three screws in the top cap. the 29's are the that have the 17mm drain plugs

One of the ways to tell is also to look for the small square recess on the side of the carbs. Not sure which carb, offhand, but it's on an outside carb.

on right hand side of carbs as if you were sitting on bike there is a insert between manifold side and carb body. there are numbers there and it will be stamped 29. otherwise just look at airbox side, lots of difference there. hope it helps

Plummen... I don't believe the bowls will interchange from a VM26 to a VM29. the 29 bowl is quite a bit larger and shaped differently.
