KZ650 Petcock Fuel Line Elbow
08 May 2008 07:21
Gas seems to be leaking from this right angle elbow. It's just a metal to metal connection. There is a grove in the middle of the elbow but it doesn't seem like an o-ring was there or will fit. I can pull the right angle elbow out of the petcock so maybe that's the problem. It shouldn't come apart?
Let me know if there should be some seal or if I just need to use some silcon RTV or tape it or invest in one of those aftermarket ones.

Wow that search button really works!
Here are the options.
1. Clean the elbow and Put JB Weld on the exposed section of the elbow's fitting, and then slide it the rest of the way in. Make sure there's a bead all of the way around the insertion point, and when it's dry, come back and file/sand the bead down to a small ridge so that it doesn't look like crap.
2. Tap new threads and buy a new 90 degree elbow with the same size threads. You can use tape, JB Weld or Liquid Solder on the threads.
3. Use Teflon tape. That way it's a lot easier than taking the line off if you want to pull the tank. Quick, but not necessarily a permanent fix.
4. Buy a new petcock
The elbow isn't supposed to come!

I've JB welded mine in. Been like that for two years now with no problems.
Just make sure you point the outlet where you want it to be while it's drying.

Looks like some of us have had the same problem. JB weld worked for me. Several years ago. Give it 24 hours to cure.

Same thing happened to mine. RetroRiceRocketRider gave me a great idea. I tapped the opening with a 1/8 x 27 pipe thread tap and screwed in a 1/8 x 5/16 brass elbow. Wrapped a little teflon tape on it and seems to work great.

Wow. Great idea putting threads on these parts. I would have done that had you posted sooner.
I ended up using Permatex Liquid Solder $1.99 at parts store and it holding good so far.
In the event that it leaks 5+ years from now I will be threading these parts.

And for those who aren't aware of it, the orignal outlet hole (the one in question here) can be tapped and plugged to block it off, and the "blind" hole on the opposite side of the petcock can be drilled and tapped so that the fitting is towards the front of the bike = won't hit the airbox.

I haven't taken it off to check thread diameter and I'm sure it's metric threads, but IIRC the drain screw/bolt on the bottom can be re-tapped to 1/8" x 27 NPT so the fitting can be located there as well = even more fitment options! :woohoo:
