I am having the same problem with my 77 kz1000. I plugged the overflow tube just to see what happens and then it started leaking from the air filter?

Welcome to the KZR nation... great to have you here. Let's get a picture of this bike...
If you don't have one, install a new inline fuel filter and change it at the beginning of each season. That will prevent any tank or gas debris for lodging in the needle valve or blocking jets or passageways.
Don't depend on any filter that may or may not be built into the petcock. Don't ask how I know.
Best of success.
BTW, add your year, model and location to your signature. It will help get the best responses and it's considered real friendly too.

I actually let the gas out of the hole in the bottom of the carb and then tapped it a few times while turning the gas on. I then fired it up and I have no more leak? Thanks for the help.

leaking from the air filter--- a RED FLAG!
Gasoline may have also entered crankcase. Would sniff-test oil for gasoline odor indicating fuel contamination.
Before cranking the engine, would also play it safe by changing the oil and filter and assuring proper funtioning of the float bowl overflow circuits.
Good Luck!
