surging/cutting out??

Ok guys an issue that has cropped up on my KZ1000 is when cruising at about 45 mph the enging starts doing what I can only describe as surging or cutting out. It idles fine and will flat out get it out of the box but it wont cruise for any length of time. I'm thinking fuel issue here but I'm not that familier with the bikes fuel system yet.

The bike has Hi comp pistons but otherwise is stock in the engine area.

It sounds like your are running lean at cruise power. Does it surge when you are on steady throttle, meaning staying at a speed like 70mph. If so then you need to raise the slide needle up one notch.

Might also be crud (rust, dirt or whatever) suspended in the fuel inside fuel tank which hovers and collects around and obstructs the petcock pickup tubes (located up inside the tank) while cruising along.

Could remove the petcock, check and clean petcock pickup tubes. And flush out the fuel tank with fresh clean gasoline.

As already noted, could be obstructed fuel cap vent. To test, just try running with cap loosened, and see if that helps restore fuel flow.

Good Luck! :)

Not unusual, because requires minimum fuel flow at idle. :)

YOU MAY NEED TO CLEAN OUT YOUR PILOT JETS. IF ANY MODS HAVE BEEN DONE YOU WILL NEED TO UP SIZE.

talked to previous owner. the bike had a backfire problem. he upsized the jets and cured the problem. I'll get some time this week I hope to look it over very good and I'll post the results here. It might help some one down the road who is having similar issues.

Ok guys took off the tank and carbs today. reset the floats and checked the fuel flow from the tank. I took it out and the problem still exists. the only sugestion I havent tried as of yet in the fuel area is the needles. I read in the manual I need to pull the trottle shaft. will I need to resync the carbs after that? This problem is only in the mid RPM range. If I open it to full trottle wile its surging it will pull till I run out of guts to hold it.

Any other sugestions for me before i rename this bike Basket case??

the only jet I actually saw a number on is the big one in the center the needle fits in. its a 130. I also have discovered since my last post the vents on the carbs are plugged. I'm going to try to find the time before work today to unplug them and see what happens.
