KZ650b air pods
06 Aug 2007 11:50
I just bought a '77 KZ650B. I changed out the airbox with pods andthe main jets from 102.5 to 110.It still doesn't want to run without the Choke. What could the problem be?It didn't idle very well before either.I also want to install a Dyna electronic ignition, Is that something that should be installed by a shop?

You can probably figure out the ignition yourself if your a little handy.
Was the bike running good before going to pods? I bet it wasn't and I bet it has nothing to do with the pods (they don't make that much of a difference for idle although they will change things a bit).

It was very cold blooded. It would run fine after it warmed up.I'm also wondering what the adjusters do that are sticking through the bottom/ front of the float bwls.I can't seem to find anything about them in my manual. The carbs are vm24ss.

Those 'adjusters' are the pilot screws. You turn them in/out to richen/lean the air & fuel mixture at idle.

On the 650's, some have the pilot screws and some have air screws on the side of the carb.
I have one of each.

WARNING The pilot jet adjustment screws are certainly not on the bottom of the carburetors!
I think the screws you are referring to are drain screws!
Have you cleaned the carbs? Have you set the float height? Are there any cracks in the manifold to engine (carb rubbers) connection?
Have you done a complete tune up? Spark plugs, wires, WG coil mod? New points and condensor?
Those are the basic questions every

It has all new plugs, wires, points set.The part on the carbs I'm speaking of are little white plastic knob like thangs. They are attached to screws and will only move about a 3rd of a full turn. That is where they are stopped by the float bowl.I've had the carbs off and cleaned them when I put in larger main jets. They were in pretty good shape.Just waiting on some new gaskets, they are leaking.Still a much larger puddle under my American Pile of.........Besides changing the Mains, should I have changed something else as well?

Ummmm, I don't think were talking about the same thing.
Lemme see if I can find a diagram......
I'm talking about part #30/31. The pic doesn't show where it goes, but it's on the bottom of the carbs toward the engine.

The pieces you refer to are pilot mixture screws; located on the carb bottom toward the engine side. The plastic caps are restrictors that are intended to limit the movement of the screws to about a 1/3 turn. To turn the screws more, you can take off the bowls or remove the plastic caps... they will crack and break when removed. They also serve to functional purpose other than to restrict movement.
The idle mixture on your bike appears lean. You should adjust the mixture screws by turning them counter-clockwise. A good starting point with your #15 pilot jets would be about 2 to 2 1/2 turns out from lightly seated. It might also be a good idea to install some #17.5 pilot jets and clean the internal carb passageways associated with the pilot and choke (enrichener) circuits.

I hate those plastic restrictors:angry:
bike killer has a different set of carbs then Misery does that is the confusion here.
