Went to the drag strip last Friday. What a blast! It's been a few years. It's the first time out on a fresh motor. Best time was a 12.23 @ 108 against a vrod. Here's something odd that happened. I rode the bike to the track, raced, and rode it home and parked it in the garage. Then Tuesday I started out for a ride and could not get it above 4k rpms, it just spit and sputtered. At the suggestion of the local bike shop I threw a new set of plugs in it and blammo, back to it's normal bad self! Easy fix, but baffles me how the plugs go bad AFTER cooling off.

Love that model and nice riding too ....... something I always wanted to do from 13 on (more so with a rod) and never came up with the cash and as I look back now maybe was a little too lazy also. Had a few nice street cars till I got married though and had fun with em on the street. Good friend that hung out together moved to with in 10 miles of Byron drag way and raced et racing for years and years with his 67 396 SS Chevelle so he never gave up.

Yes, it's quite the rush to race like that. It's also a lot safer than I think many people realize (like my mom and sister). If you're going to get hurt at the strip then it most likely was your own fault. It's not going to be someone pulling out of a driveway, a deer, potholes, etc. If something does go wrong you at least have the EMT right there to scrape you off the track. I'd like to think it makes me a better rider. At the very least I am very competent at nice smokey burnouts and well you know.....how cool is that! B)

Is a 78 KZ1000 supposed to beat a V-Rod or were you just better off the line n stuff than the other guy? ... ... :)

Not sure how fast a vrod is supposed to be. I was expecting him to beat me. I am not a practiced drag racer, just a guy that likes smoked burnouts, hole shots and going fast.

A well tuned KZ1000 should be a good run for a vrod.

Glad you had a fun safe time.

Back in 2011, I took my then race GPz550 to the 1/4 with my brother for his birthday at Sacramento Raceway. He has a Bandit 1200 (2001 air cooled), and we just ran for fun. Being the first time at the drags on the sticky pavement, my main concern wan not to loop it. It was well over 100* and got hotter before he night fell. Wearing my full race leathers, in that heat, I felt like a baked potato. I beat him off the line every time, but never could beat him to the finish line.

I recommend it for anyone.

In my first post I talked about having to replace the plugs after racing and that fixed my sputtering problems, well not so! I replaced plugs and revved it up and it seem right to me, however last Tuesday I went to go for a ride and had the same issue. I rode it down to the local bike shop (Zack's Cycle) and had a chat with Zack. I won't bore you with the details but what I found out it that my poor bike was being choked off at the air box. I am running a stock airbox. Zack had me remove the snorkel and the top to the airbox where the air filter goes. BIG difference! Air filter is brand new and only maybe 3 weeks old. My baby needs to breathe! I think the end solution to this is to ditch the stock airbox and run individual air filters. What kind of air filters do you all like? the natural option for me is K&N's, but are there other brands that are just as good with out the K&N expense? I don't want some emgo cheapies.

Those do look nice and for a good price, but there is almost no information on them. Do you know if they are like K&N filters and can be cleaned and re-oiled? Also for my bike they only sell the cone shaped filters. since I need more air flow I would think the oval filters from K&N would provide more air. Saving money is a good thing, but not if it sacrifices performance. I've got a problem and need solution, not more problems. I'll spend the money on K&N's if that is what it takes. Does anyone else here use the APE filters? If so how do you like them?

Yes you clean and oil em just like K and Ns ........ you can also clean and run em dry too which I have done but it only trays the big stuff...... (I have em oiled now) mine are pretty old now and have held up great and they came in the oval size back when I bought em for the smooth bores. Will admit now that I see they dropped the ovals in that size The K and Ns are a little nicer.

Won't let me edit this for some reason but anyway betting you will have a few telling you to leave the air box on (which is fine) ...... did you leave the filter in and only open up the top ?? Might have to do a little jetting if you change too but you probably already know that. Hoping this was the fix to your rough running too but it makes me wonder why it ran so good with the box on then not all of a sudden. Would be nice to see your next trip to the strip to see if you stayed the same or picked up a tenth too.

I had the top off at the track but not the snorkel. What I found in my case was that with one thing off (snorkel or air filter cover) it ran ok, but would sputter a little between 4-5k rpm. With both off it is smooth in all ranges of throttle and in all gears. I have stayed with the stock airbox due to comments I have read here, but it is now causing me performance issues. running it without the snorkel, no big deal, but without the air filter top makes me worry the air filter will vibrate out of place and then it can start sucking crap into the engine. Those APE filters are very tempting and if I could get the ovals I'd be all over that deal.

While at Zack's Cycle yesterday Zack was asking about the racing I did. He asked about what kind of rear tire air pressure I was running, I wasn't sure, some where between 20-25 psi. He then asked if I had rim locks which I don't. He cautioned me that the tire could slip on the rim causing it to tear the tube (I am running tubes in my rims). Do any of you that race have rim locks? ZukiDave? Anyone ever have this happen and rip a tube? I have raced this bike plenty of times with no issues and I am just wondering if I have gotten lucky? Rim locks are cheap and easy to install, but since I've had no issues I am leaning against making that change. Whadda ya think?

Zack is a very experienced racer, We were competitors 100 years ago. LOL . Check out his stores website and you will see his and a lot of others racing Pro stock, Funny Bike and Top Fuelers. Even Zed1015s funny bike is in there somewhere. ( pretty sure ). Rim locks are a good idea when you are really trying to have your tire hook up. Street racings different..

PS Zack never beat us . But still a good guy.
