Apologies if this has been addressed previously....My son just bought a 1980 ltd 1000 with a star racing "sideshot" exhaust..(which I am assuming is the reason the center stand was removed!) How does one perform basic maintenance/repair tasks without one? Even simple chain adjustment procedure calls for one? I have a HF hydraulic bike jack that won't work on KZ's due to engine/exhaust sticking out below frame rails...He wants to bolt together some sort of "gantry" from which to "hang" bike, or possibly remove back half of 4 to 1, & temporarily re-install center stand for maintenance...Any suggestions? Thanx, all!

I removed mine years ago and just slip it on and off in the garage when I need it....... I've done it so many times I can get the pin in and out in 10 seconds or less ......spring is not needed.

I had to take my center stand of when I put my 4-1 on. I use a paddock stand from harbor freight. Cycle Gear has good pieces on them too.

Sometimes you just have to take the exhaust off to get at certain unrelated things. Also, many of the higher speed exhaust set ups have quick remove features. Usually a spring and loop.

The KZ1000Ltd's never came with a center stand because one would not fit with the stock Mac exhausts. They have the frame lugs so one can be fitted exhaust system permitting. If you just use it as a shop stand, without the spring etc. then there wouldn't be problems with most exhausts, it's a different matter if you want to retract it and ride with it in place.

A rear stand lifting on the swingarm can work.
I had to remove my center stand, and cut off the mounts to fit a braced swingarm.
The swingarm has spools now, so the stand lifts on them.

I knew what I meant :) either way they didn't work with a center stand and that's why they weren't fitted.

I have read it several times that's why Ltd's didn't have center stands, but that doesn't mean it's right, but they didn't come with center stands.

Maybe because of the 16" rear wheel.

It had occurred to me the stand would perhaps need to be shorter, or it would be a bugger to get it up on the stand with it sitting 3/4" or so lower.
