Bottom line is you need to strip the motor and inspect, likely crank bearings scrap, cam bearings scrap, piston skirts may have picked up in the bores and damaged the pistons, cam lobes possibly damaged. Every bearing in the motor will of overheated !!!

The replacement engine might also be bad - you just don't know.

Of course - that's the same risk as with with any used bike.

A rebuilt engine is no guarantee of quality, either, as it could have been done poorly.

All we can do is get as much info as possible prior to purchase :)

A few years ago a guy in England was selling an old KZ440 engine on Ebay. Clearly had been left outside - no idea what was wrong with it. He was selling it as an ornament/conversation piece! His advert even suggested turning it into an outdoor table or leaving it in the garden as a sort of gnome. Those were the days when record shops, hairdressers, burger shops and cafes used to decorate their interiors with random automotive artefacts. Maybe OP could yet find some use for that engine.

Personally I would strip it before parting with any money - there is always a slim chance that it’s not terminal (cam bearing nipped up etc)
