Changing primary clutch basket with cylinder fixed on engine possible?

Hello Z-heads,

i´ve never tried, or  have had the must to do it, to change the primary clutch basket on an kz900 or kz1000 A1 / A2 engine,  only upside down, will say, with the complete cylinder + head let bolted on!

Is it possible, to split the case, by only departing  the oil pan, covers, oilpump,..and get the primary clutch basket out ???

Must do it in the next time i think, cause the noise while idling under 1000 Rpm´s is hefty loud...

Thanx in advance!
Greetings, Joe

Yes! The lower case can be removed to service or repair the gears and clutch whilst leaving the crank , cylinder and head complete and undisturbed.

As Zed said All correctly, YES. Easy-Peezy. No reason to disturb upper end bits. I know You probably already know this because of your numerous years of history with these birds, you'd just forgotten, ha. I have my springs replaced for good measure. Coming with two different stock-sized damper springs, thin and fatter, I've seen numerous times when the fatter ones fractured and failed. If out of a long slumber wouldn't think the inner needle bearing/sleeve would be an issue but..won't know till you get there. You are a half a world across from me where the weather is constant humid but per Capata chicks with the biggest melons!

Thank you both  for your quick responses !
(i have assumed this, ...but was unsure about, normally is it done by a complete engine overhauling by depating everything by the whole job...as i mentioned, i´ve never done this just from underways.)

Cheers !

Yes,After a break of 8 years, you forget a lot of things, and as I said, I've never just removed the lower half of the housing from an otherwise complete engine...
I still have an complete Basket with all inner and outer parts here, in a very good condition: You can´t move the springs radial or axial when you touch them, looks like new.
Yes, and it´s to moisty, to cold, to srwe this days on it, have to wait for better temperatures,..ya can see the right time, when the chickens wear thinner clothes... ;-)

I did that to swap my transmission. The best thing I did was to install a solid shift shaft as the old one was hollow causing mis shifts in second gear and destroying the shift dogs on the gears.
APE sold solid tool steel ones.

The one I have came with a tranny I got on eBay. The one shown must be the original and when I looked it up it was said they went with solid ones. The second I installed in 15 started popping out of gear in only a few years. Then I noticed APE was selling them along with a billet main fork. The later bikes came with a heavier one so I used the new one I bought. 1075 kit and I RIDE THE PISS OUT OF IT no problems so far. It's been almost two years. I'd say it's worth looking in to.

I have used the solid shift shaft on a couple of my bikes but in general for the stock 900 and moderate driving I don't think its absolutely needed, but if it makes you feel better slap it in there. They are not that expensive .
