30 Dec 2024 06:55 - 30 Dec 2024 12:01Wookie was Absolutely Correct!! If i'd noted that the tensioner was backed out that far i would of been super concerned! You just got plum lucky, buy a poor mans tax ticket, aka Lotto Ticket stat.
ABSOLUTELY!!!
👍
Compression numbers on COLD motor with 75 miles:

Nice bike and build!
You was lucky !! those small bolts holding the camchaintensioner strip out very very easy i use only 9NM on my bikes on them and a little blue locktite under the screwhead. You can use helocoils i done that on my FJ1200. One thing i wonder about is your torque spec on the cylheadnuts. 40 ft/lbs sounds too high to me .shouldnt it be more like 29 ft/lbs ?

I will reinstall those two bolts with Loc-tite (blue?) before the motor runs again. Thought about that, and I appreciate the reminder...
When (re)using Kawasaki factory cylinder studs 29 ft. lbs. is the specified torque, but with APE (Heavy Duty) studs 42 ft. lbs. is acceptable and recommended for this KZ engine model per the APE website:

"Low" numbers for a newborn stone-cold motor that hasn't pooped a diaper yet?
🧐
Should the oil (not filter) be changed before parking the bike for the Winter?
75 miles on the oil shown since the engine was initially started.

Wouldn't hurt to change it on a fresh build now that it's had a good run. If that compression gets much higher you will have to swop out the E85 for diesel
Lol

That oil looks grayish color. Not the common amber. What kind of oil is it?
My vote is ride a little more, than change it out.

Run E10 Regular with no issue, and the spark plugs look very good.
The oil I have been using for years is Shell Rotella T4 15W40
Pic without flash
The color is likely affected by old oil being washed out of the welded crankshaft that sat for thirty-five years.
🤭
Changed oil, and these particles drained out with the filter:
Oil lost was just under a quart:
😑

Aha That explains it !
The gray/silver colored oil is normal on the first oilchange after rebuild.

Take this for what it's worth, Dave, but Rotella oil isn't what it used to be. It's know for shearing down out of grade pretty fast. That's why shifting tends to deteriorate quickly. Don't run that stuff more than 3k miles. I'm not bashing your choice, in fact, my 750 has Rotella in it, it's just that there are better products available.

I've been changing oil around 2500 miles since noticing a quicker degradation, but assumed it was due to my slightly aggressive riding attitude.
So why would Shell do the stupid and fix a perfectly good thing that wasn't broke?
...and what economically priced alternative is recommended to use as a substitute?
🧐
