Hey!

2005, KZ1000P. Valve lash question. First I did go to the valve adj sticky but pics were deleted by youtube. My question is--- when following the book the valve cam lobes are at different positions when cams are as specified and some measurements end up a little high,,, others a little low... but...

When I check positioning each lobe 180 degrees away from the shim, all fall into specs. It seems a bit confusing. Why wouldn't they want all tolerances checked in the same manner?

Kaws method is just to save time in the shop to check more than one shim as a time per camshaft position.
Just set them with the lobe pointing directly away from the shim (180 degs) and you can't go wrong.
Set them as close to 0.15mm as possible with stock cams.

The later model big KZ method, which is the same as the Suzuki GS method, on how to position the cams is best, because it puts two adjacent valves on the base circle at the same time.  With the lobe pointing away from the valve, the adjacent valve spring is going to be depressed, and that results in the cam being pushed upwards in the cam bearing clearance, giving a false reading showing more clearance than there really is.  Realize of course, this is only .0015" or .002", but this can make a difference if you are on the SMALL end of the clearance range.  So, for example, if you measure .003", the actual is more like .002 or maybe .0015".   If you keep this in mind, and make sure to set all the clearances are at the top of the range, it's okay, to use the 180 degree method, though.

Makes sense being the cam bearing tolerance is .001-.006".

Jesus..... Man I never ever would have thought that! That said,,, I see the point! It would depend on the wear of the cam bearings but the compression of the spring adjacent would push up on the cam. That totally checks all the boxes. Thank you....
