KZ1000 ignition cover cavity mistery ?

Hi all,
I'm wondering what this cavity is for, low on the ignition cover ?
It was full of dried mud when I took it apart, wondering if I was right to scrub it clean, and whether something else should be done ?
Thanks in advance

On the early 72-80 engine the ignition case cavity like yours is not present. It´s for draining/venting humidity but yours look like some KHI engineer was a little monday morning clueless.

It´s an oil temp sensor

I bought the oil sensor and display over 20 year ago at Klasmo Bikes in Hamburg (Klasmo Bikes is out of business).

If you need the oil sensor and display it can be yours for 45 Euro shipped.

I wonder what Kawasaki was planning w that cavity. it's almost as if they were going to do something, went ahead & made the engine cover, then changed their minds. later models still had the same cover.

Yep.
So my question remains: am I ok with just cleaning that cavity and leaving it like that (like it shows in my first picture) ?

KZ 650's used that location for the oil pressure sensor.

650s don't have a cavity like that. or the extra engine cover where the cavity resides.
