Hi everyone,
Please have a look in new members for my intro here
I will start here the "blog" of the "full spa" restoration, not a concours attempt, just a fairly thorough bubble bath and scrubbing of the old gal who looked very neglected.

(can't seem to upload pictures right now, maybe it's that rule of having 2 messages verified - so I'm posting this without pictures and will add more messages later with photos)

Behind the sprocket cover, there is a liberal amount of a spcial good-for-rust-prevention mix of dirt and grease and spider poop:

And here is the spider :

I have one question, regarding my petcock.
Would y'all say that this diaphragm is good enough, or needs replacing ?
It did not seem to leak before I removed it.

Looks like you will be little busy. I would look for a full petcock rebuild kit.

Thanks, I'm ordering a kit from z1enterprises.

Next question: exhaust clamps and collars.
They have a susbtstantial patina of rust.
See below a photo where one collar and one clamp have been wire-brushed (the collars are trickier to scrub, I can finish with a rotary tool).

Would y'all think they can be re-used, or are they too pitted ? (especially the collars)

A steel wire brush on aluminum parts create a rough surface. A brass wire brush on soft and sensitive surfaces like alu gives you a smooth finish.

Yes. Well these exhaust clamp/collar items are seriously crusted so they need the big wire wheel. For the engine covers, I'll go more gently for sure....

But are you meaning that the exhaust clamp/collar items need a smooth finish, in order to perform their function ?

The pitting on your exhaust collars and clamps is purely cosmetic, and will not affect the performance of their function.

Thanks Skidmark,
I'll scrub the clamps and the collars (even if they'll be hidden from view) and reinstall them... soon.

Another question for the experienced gearheads: Does this sprocket look healthy to you ?
(it does to me, I mean the teeth don't look all carved and bent like they did on my old XL600R which had seen copious amounts of wheelie practice)

The gear looks ok. But if your going to replace the chain get new gears. Everything wears together and lasts longs. Here’s the catch 22. If your replacing the chain go to a 530 if you don’t already have that side.
