Making good progress.
quick question: that grommet around the gear lever axle looks shot.
Any thoughts on how to get it out and replaced ?

Socket that has a slightly smaller outer than the metal part of the seal. Tap it out gently.
From memory it comes out towards the inside of the cover but check first.

On my 1978 there are 2 seals, inner and outer. Not sure on your J. Either or they are pressed fit. A small seal puller or flat screwdriver should pull them out easily…

Same on my KZ650
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

It´s only one seal on the outside of the sprocket cover. You have to push it from inside to the outside of the cover with a best fit or expandable drive punch. You need only some light taps and you are done.

On my Z1B 1975 there are also 2 seals, inner and outer. Just renewed them, not a big job
