masking engine covers ? was created by KZmarcel
Hi,
getting ready to paint the engine soon, in aluminum.
I want to polish the covers, so I want to mask them during the painting.

Any advice on the best way to do that ? masking tape all over ? wrap in plastic bag and re-bolt to engine ?

When i painted my cases i put the cover on with some old bolts and when finished took covers off, cleaned the paint off with thinners before properly shinning up the cases.

A lazy way, which I have done in the past, is get some vaseline on your finger and also using a cotton bud for fasteners and nooks and crannies, rub a light smear all over the cases you don't want painted, any spray will just wipe off. This is fraught with danger though, you don't want to be touching anything you ARE going to paint, even with a clean fingers wiped off with a rag! So its tricky on the edges of the cases adjacent to the painted surface, mask before applying greasy finger!

    Indeed !
I ended up putting blue-tape everywhere, worked out like a charm. I just need to buy a fresh roll of blue tape now...
