Yes, it's set at 1,000. Thanks for the thought, though. The clatter corresponds with hitting the throttle as well-- if I blip the throttle, I hear the clatter.

14 Feb 2022 19:19Carbs out of sync will cause rattle as well.. If I were you I'd strip the engine down and put an endless chain in if that really is the problem, if you have no experience joining hyvo chains you risk screwing up the whole engine, even the people I know who are qualified to join these chains prefer fitting endless chains, that's got to tell you something...If your idle speed is set too low the engine will rattle. Is your idle speed set around 1000 - 1050 rpm? Ed

I'm going to experiment with splitting and re-joining an old hyvo, and silver soldering the pins on the masterlink. If I get some good information or good results, I'll post it. If anyone out there has experience with having done this with a hyvo in a J engine, please let me know-- I'd love to hear about your experience.

I'm tempted, but have you successfully done this yourself with a tool like this? If so, how did it go?

Installed a new Morse master link cam chain (ebay item 333499911108) in late March this year, and have put 6000 plus miles on the engine without issue to date since.
The JMP MK-1588 was the best kit I could find for the purpose, despite having a tooling issue while executing the process.
