<hijack>We noticed the No Bull business documents & wanted to comment.

We met the owner of No Bull Used Motorcycle Parts, Bob Conger and his family, when they acquired four vendor spaces next to ours at the Mid Ohio swap meet a few years ago. Family owned & operated. They're good people. Initially, NBUMP occupied the warehouse space vacated by Z1 Enterprises. They've expanded since.
In addition to bike parts, Bob offers a service that, within certain legal and bike age constraints, he can assist in getting a current, legal Vermont license registration for a bike that lacks a title and, that VT license registration can then be used to obtain a title in one's state of residence for said title-less bike. Bob was instrumental in assisting us with the process, resulting in a clear KY title for our current project, The Wounded Z. Considering the value of the service, the cost is minimal and it only required about two months, from originating the paperwork to KY title in hand. We purchased The Wounded Z with the assurance from Bob that that we would be successful in obtaining a title providing that the criteria mentioned on the No Bull website were met. The process worked perfectly and, when the title arrived in the mail, The Wounded Z instantly quadrupled or more in value over what we paid for it. :woohoo: </hijack>

You are fortunate this still works in Kentucky, many states will no longer accept Vermont registrations as Vermont only does this as a revenue generating enterprise.
In Michigan you have to run and jump through three burning hoops at the dmv office.
I used to live on west highway 146 down the road from LaGrange.

Used a broken tap to get the last few threads in for the helicoil.

Mine has 10 Rick. Fun stuff to clean and lube. I figure the next time, the retainer tabs will probably not take bending straight once again .. probably break off next time around.. I just made an offer for a used 750 twin release on fleabay. I don't really need it, but after all of this release mechanism chatter, I couldn't resist.


They really do need to be disassembled and lubed to get any road grit and grime out of the helix / balls. The chassis grease steve used will probably work ok in his climate, but since I do not live in death valley, it would probably not work out so well in a colder climate.


For the record, the release lever is properly oriented in this pic.

Are there any special tricks to putting these back together?

They are tricky to assemble. I use grease to hold the 10 1/8" balls in place, then carefully rotate the helix into place, taking extra special care not to let any of the balls fall out of position. The retainer goes with the 3 tab end towards the engine. The adjustment side has 2 retainer tabs showing.


I think the helix can be rotated into 4 different position, so the starting point needs to correspond to the proper orientation of the actuator lever in relation to the outer helix mounting tabs. If this makes any sense. (trying to explain it as clearly as I can) Note, thicker grease will not move well in colder climate temperatures.


AND, since searching this release mechanism, I have one 750 twin on it's way from fleabay, and then I ordered another internal retainer sleve, and THEN. the confirmation emails naturally show up with a NOS inner helix being available, that I just HAD to order that too. I need to stop following this thread so I can stop ordering parts that I don't need. lol

**Note in the ebay pic that the actuator lever is fully forward, and the inner helix is fully extended. The external snap ring stops it from "unscrewing" completely turning all of those pesky balls loose.
