It looks like Z1 cylinder heads sell for around $200 to $350 on eBay. If the head is in good shape you should be able to get most of your $500 back, if you can deal with eBay. I'd go for it (and have).

And speaking that, I have a parts engine that is either a 75 or 76. And I have a 74 Z1 that needs some new cases. I'm out of town until Monday, but if the numbers match maybe we can work something out.

I think he was talking about the 300+ guests lurking on line. I'm always hidden. I find it interesting when new members chose to be hidden and not know I can see them but they can't see me.

Rick H. wrote: ... While the price "sounds" good, there has to be a reason it was taken apart. No one that I know would take a perfectly good motor apart just to say, "There I took it apart". Why was it taken apart? Take a real good look at the components and try to figure out what it is going to need. Carefully measure important items. ...Rick H.

^Good advice.^

Basket cases, be they carb racks, motors or entire bikes become so for any number of reasons; life gets in the way, money, or Bubba ("There I took it apart"...) is overwhelmed by the prospect of reassembly, something much more difficult than "tearing it apart" .

There's an area of possible damage to look for on empty cases if diligence wasn't used during disassembly.

A case bolt is hidden under the starter; it can't be seen unless the starter is removed. If the two bolts used to split the cases are tightened in an attempt to split the cases without removing said bolt, a crack will occur where the drive (input ) shaft bushing rests in the upper case. This is the machined hole in the upper case where the drive shaft's bushing (opposite end from the clutch) is located by the pin pressed into the hole. The crack will be located parallel to the drive shaft, and will intersect the locator pin on both sides. See below for the location to examine. (This case is not cracked.)

The crack will appear as a hairline defect in the otherwise-smooth machined surface, extending on both sides of the pin. Examine this area carefully in good light. Wear your specs if you need them.

If the crack goes unnoticed, the motor will assemble & run fine but, there will be slow leak/weep of motor oil that can be difficult to locate, as it might seem to spring out of nowhere.

A significant fraction of cases we've seen at swap meets & otherwise for sale over the decades exhibit this damage. Caveat emptor. We've never had to attempt a repair of a case cracked in this location. Other members might be able to offer advice.

Here is a better photo of that crack. As slmjim says, it develops when the top case bolts are not all removed and someone tries to split the cases. It was on the engine in my blue Z1B. It's behind the transmission case so only visible when that case is removed. In this case it went all the way through. I coated the inside with Kawabond to ensure no oil leakage. So far so good.

By coincidence I saw this today. It's a complete NOS '76 engine.

Where is that at? I'd be all over that if it's reasonably close.

Ok it’s found a new home. Here is how I found it. No time to dig into it other than looking at the cams and pistons for aftermarket stuff. Appears bone stock. 66mm bore and no noticeable markings on the cams
