Hery All!

I have a pretty serious mystery sound that I need help diagnosing.
When I shut off my engine I hear what sounds like a piece of junk rattling around in my engine for a second before coming to rest.

Give a listen to my video here and tell me if it sounds familiar to any of you.

It sounds like its in the top end somewhere. would anything actually have room to rattle around like that if it were in the bottom with the bulk of the oil? Am I crazy? I have no idea what it could be.

Here are some notes as to what I have been experiencing lately that may or may not be helpful:

1982 kz440 ltd
9000 (ish) miles on the odometer but the speedo didnt have a cable when I got the bike so.... who knows.
The bike sat for 3 years until I recently brought it back to life.
It needs valve seals (oil fouling on the left spark plug.)
The head gasket has a slight weep of oil.
The Cam Cover on the front of the engine leaks,

I adjusted the valves to spec 2 days ago and went for a ride afterwards.
I was pushing the engine a bit hard going up towards the 7-8000 rpm range for about 30 secs or so every so often.
About 20 miles into my ride the engine got a bit buzzy with vibrations and it sounded like a valve on the right hand side maybe had gotten a bit loose again. I checked the valves today and they are still adjusted properly. The clicking from the right side of the engine seemed to have stopped but when I shut it down...... rattle rattle rattle,......

Also, My left exhaist sounds a bit more "poppy" than the right does..... Theres a video attached for that as well but I'm not sure if its related to the main mystery sound.
Ugh. Just when I thought I had a ridable bike!!!!!!

Please help with any advice/knowledge.
This is my first "project" bike and I'm trying to stay sane while I work on it but...... (bangs head on wall)

Thanks in advance!!!
-Smallz

Can't tell but there is a counter balancer that might make that kind of noise. It could also cause vibration if out of time.

The rattle for a few seconds after shutdown has me wondering. Almost sounds like your starter is not disengaging after start and when you shut it down it rattles to a stop. Could also be the starter clutch loose., but then the starter would probably make a horrible noise when trying to start it. Pull the spark plug wires or if your bike will allow the starter to spin with the kill switch in the stop position,, work the start button a few times. Make sure the starter doesn't run on when you release the start button.

Once the engine stops there should be nothing in there still moving.

Don't fix it until it's broken.

The right carb need some more throttle (no poppy sound).
You have to sync the carbs,
The left one is the master (only adjust by idle screw), the right one is the slave and has to be adjust by the balance adjust screw to open or close the right butterfly to get equal vacuum on both ports.
Turn the screw 1/4 - 1/2 in to get same poppy sound on both.
No need to remove the carbs, you can do it on engine idle.

Remove clutch cover and have a look in there that is not a good rattle if nothing rolling around in there sump cover, then top cover but definately needs internal investigation.

So I opened up the clutch cover. I don't see anything obvious rolling around in there but other than that, I dont know much about the clutch yet so I wouldnt know if anything was wrong with it by looking at it. .

Opened up the sump and found some crusty crap in the filter. Looks like varnished old gunk chunks and some white specs of something soft. not sure what either are from though.

Nothing big and metallic or plastic that would, in my opinion, have made such a large rattly sound....

i keep listening and it's hard to tell where it's coming from i would say use a stephoscope to listen to find where it is coming from.

If you have a Harbor Freight nearby, you can buy a mechanic's stethoscope for $3.99. They list two different models but they look identical. :)

I found pieces like that in the sump once and found that the
chain guide was old and falling apart.

I'd check the counterbalancer under the cover on the left side.

The counter balancers are in the center and you would have to split the cases.

Is there a pan? I had a 750 twin come in and it hopped on it's center stand. Turned out to be the counterbalancer coming apart.
