Hello,

I purchased the M18 kit about 6 years ago for my KZ650. I recently purchased another KZ650 and cannot figure out who I bought this kit from? Has anyone replied to this thread to advise where this fitting kit can be purchased? Desperate and in need, again!

BTW. I installed a 93 ZR1100 (full sized) external cooler with this M18 fitting kit. I have roughly 12k miles on this set up, and this bike is my daily driver. I also installed an Off The Shelf Temp Gauge that is commonly mounted in the Oil Filler Hole. I expected that this Oil Cooling solution would bring down the typical operating temperature. I can say that this was not the case. So, the before and after operating temps are the same. The benefit has been that there is an additional ~1 qt of oil in the system. This means the oil is not quite as spent/degraded and I can run longer between oil changes.

I understand there are several different ways to plumb the system. I did not do a deep comparative dive to test multiple setups. It's possible that there is a more efficient way to route the oil to actually reduce oil temp, but I am content with this set up.

Your comments are greatly encouraged and appreciated.
Mike

Could be easier to get a GPZ750/750 zephyr/ZR7 sump, they are all plumbed for an oil cooler

Thanks for the feedback. In my case, I have the engine out on the bench currently so this is a possibility. For the owner that has the motor in the bike...not so appealing. I will check into some OEM exploded view drawing and explore this a bit deeper. Thanks.

I'm sure the sump would be easy to get off with the engine in frame, someone correct me if I'm wrong ?   I have the GPZ 750 R1 {oil cooler sump} and my son has a KZ650, same engine, I'm actually chasing a later sump for his bike so we can run a cooler, I hadn't planned pulling the engine out....

Yes, the oil pan drops out with the engine in the frame. R1 pan swapout is direct replacement. The "hard part" is mounting the oil cooler.
I don't have a plan and I'm sticken' to it! '77 KZ 650 / 750 GPz custom project in progress

If you buy an OEM early type cooler, the version that allows the tach cable to route normally from the head, then it's a pretty easy install.  I did it on my 750 and it's been seamless

I bought a pan from a 1982 KZ750 E, it has the oil level sensor hole as cast so no chance of leakage. The oil ports on the front lug are not drilled either so you can drill your own for 1/4NPT to -6AN, just need to tap for a divider plug.

you can get M18x1.5 AN fitting adapters for the back of the oilpan and the main oil galley and run an oil cooler between the two. I would get a dual side exit oil cooler and run both AN lines down the right side of the engine to the oil pan and main galleys. See my turbo build thread.

I went a step further and put a plug in my oil pan galley to divert all oil through a bypass thermostat, but im having oil pressure issues (like 7psi hot idle) so i just removed that plug last night. still has the thermostat, but i'm guessing even that isnt really necessary. I have the upgraded ZR750 oil pump so im a bit surprised im having issues at all... sorting this out soon i hope.

If you look at the progression of Kawasaki air cooled motors you will see they added coolers starting with the GPZ series starting in 1981. So the engineers already knew they ran a bit hot even in stock format, add a bore kit and the need becomes evident. They also knew that to progress the power output they would eventually need water cooling.

The 69mm piston in a stock 750 bore is about the thinnest liner out there. If you want your bored out air cooled motor to last you should be using one.
