KZ1100 A2 - My oil filter cover broke

But upon reflection, at idle the whole thing didn't break, but it was after I rev'd it up some that the cover would burst. I remembered the bike I took the oil pressure sensor assembly from had at one time an oil cooler that was attached, but the guy I bought the bike I'm parting out had bypassed the system running a hose from the oil pressure sensor housing to the oil pressure testing port. Inside the oil pressure sensor housing was a weird rubber plug with a bolt. I pulled that off and replaced it with the original, Could that plug have raise the pressure enough to blow the cover?

Look at the oil flow chart in shop manual.
Okay that makes sense. I checked the oil bypass valve on all of the mounting bolts and they all move. I just have a feeling I have high pressure that blowing those caps

Looking over the flow chart and going out and looking in the hole at the top of the oil filter mounting bolt its the same hole at the oil pressure sensor where that weird plug was. I'm going over to the salvage yard tomorrow, hopefully they have an oil filter cap and I'm going to try again. I did order another one on eBay as well.

Inspect your bypass valve in the oil filter cover bolt, something must block the bypass valve function.
The steel bucket over the filter body is unknown to me,must it be there?

Thanks, like I mentioned before, I checked the bypass valve in both mounting bolts and they work fine. Yes the bucket on the filter is supposed to be there.

You have to check and clean every oil channel and gallery with compressed air first.

You say you checked the oil bypass valve on all of the mounting bolts and they all move. This is ok.
But where the hack could the over pressured oil flow back into the non pressured engine oil pan?
It is for me a closed system ( the oil filter case )
For me, ( the bypass valve in the oil filter cover), it looks like more as a one way " DONĀ“T FLOW BACK INTO THE PAN UNIT "
It is like to get a faster oil pressure built for the cold start up.
It is not a real bypass vent that lead into a non or low pressure atmosphere like the old Z1 bypass valve.

Thanks Steve! That's exactly what they did and I didn't know about. When they removed the oil cooler they left the plug in and re-routed the flow using that hose in the pictures. Of course when I put the unit from the parts bike on my project bike, I transfered the plug as well, hence no oil past the oil pressure sensor and a huge build up of pressure from the oil pump and a broken oil cover. Thank goodness the bike didn't run longer that a few seconds before the cap blew. I removed the plug, re-mounted the oil sensor and hopefully tomorrow the salvage yard will have a oil filter cover I can grab. That should take care of the problem. - John
