Pig of a neutral. was created by davido
I converted from cable to hydraulic clutch on my KZ1000CSR. Ive been moving the mounting plate in and out to try to find the sweet spot where everything is working right. The bike now goes into gear, takes off and switches gear fine but Its a bugger to get into neutral. Any ideas on how to approach this??

Is the weight of the lever taking up the free play?

Not sure what you mean Steve.Theres no free play in the lever, its from the doner bike and is matched to the master cylinder and the slave cylinder,so not adjustable like the 'cable' lever. My only means of adjustment is moving the slave cylinder mounting plate in or out using spacers, putting more or less pressure on the push rod.

I was thinking it may be loading a small amount of pressure on the slave.

Clutch drag can make finding neutral a bitch. The issue could be related to your hydraulic device not disengaging the clutch far enough, thus leading to drag. Could be you need less free play. Could be your clutch plates are slightly warped thus leading to excess drag.

I had a GS1000 that was a bugger to find neutral. Adjusting freeplay made no difference. Eventually the clutch was changed and the problem went away completely.

You may both have a point there. The clutch could potentially be 35 years old ( if the PO never changed it) but if it was damaged would it not show up in other ways? Would I not have problems changing into any gear?

It would work but have a slight drag. I suggest taking the plates out, oil them and put them in one at a time.

On my old GS1000 the transmission shifted perfectly and there was no creep at idle or what have you suggesting clutch drag. The plates were functional in all ways other than they were warped just enough to cause drag that affected the finding neutral.

Ok,Ill open it up and have a look this weekend,No point messing around with the slave position if the clutch itself is not in good fettle.

To be honest,I dont remember. I bought the bike as a non runner and got it running enough to take it up the road to check the gearbox before stripping it. So, I never got familiar with the bike as it was ( cable operated ). Its possible there was a problem with the neutral but equally its possible that all is well and the problem comes from me ditching the cable operation and going with a homemade hydraulic set up!
