Leaks, leaks and more leaks was created by Skiprrdog
I just finished replacing the rubber plug in stator cover, fixed that leak, but now I notice a new one. 1976 KZ900A4, starts, idles, sounds okay, but I have drips coming off of the bottom of the inner (next to engine cases) timing cover. I took the outer cover off, no oil there but have not taken off the inner cover yet.

Bad crank seal? If so, is it a case-splitter to fix?

You mean the small case behind the ignition advance mechanism? A rather easy fix with a new seal if yes.

Here is a picture, yes, the cover that mounts to the case with six bolts. Not much to see, but you can see the oil about ready to drip off of the bottom-center boss...

Here are a couple more pictures. Took the covers off, and as you can see, there was a small amount of oil behind the cover. That gasket is obviously leaking, but I am not sure how much, if any oil is supposed to be behind that cover!

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationSmear a light coat of silicon on the gasket and threads of the bolt. Yes, there is oil in there.I get my gaskets here.

Thank you for the heads up on the gasket...I ordered a new one. I have another question, something else I noticed this morning. I had it running, was going to do a second running sync (had a vacuum leak, fixed it) and I noticed that while running, I could pull off #1 and #2 plugs and bike would not die, but If I pull off either #3 or #4, it dies. Before I started it I checked and had spark at all four spark plugs.... what would explain this? Here is a short video of it running.
Thanks!
Skip

edit: The audio on my phone goes out, but the bike keeps running when I pull off # 1 and 2, not only that, but I am hard pressed to hear a difference in the motor sound when I pull them off

Out of sync condition. It suggests to me it is running more on the other cylinders. How old are the caps?

Caps were replaced by PO, not sure, but they look new (NGK). Will test them tomorrow, and also re-sync it...

In case I did not mention it, bike also has good compression, 1-4 is 190, 195, 210, 210.

If the spark plug wires are old, hard, cracked or otherwise deteriorated from age or whatever, there could be high tension voltage leaking and causing erratic loss or weakening of spark.

I believe this was an issue with models equipped with coils having integrated built-in plug wires, where the aging wires deteriorated even though the coils themselves seemed perfectly serviceable.

The fix for me was new Dyna green coils plus new Dyna plug wires (caps come already fitted with the the new wires). The Dyna plug wires are readily available and relatively inexpensive, and come in black, red or yellow color.

A shorted or otherwise defective spark plug can also cause the engine miss, where combustion will fail on 1 or 2 cylinders leaving the engine "running" on either 3 or 2 cylinders.

With the large fours, you can limp home on just two cylinders.

Good Fortune! :(
