Hey all!
Been a bit. Have had a super busy summer and am finally getting around to prepping for yet another cold Canadian winter of building.
I have decided to upgrade to a 4-1 exhaust on my LTD...only problem is I can't seem to find one specifically for it.
My question to the collective brilliance of all things KZ...can I just run a 4-1 V&H from a non LTD 1000, and if so can I do so without cutting the bike?
I am trying to mod the bike in a way I can still return it to stock trim at a later date.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I are just a dumb welder and the search function didn't return any results that helped(more likely my fault then the search function!).

A pic of the exhaust setup you have might help.

generally speaking the headers all bolt up to the engine the same and get around the frame about the same(except sidewinders) it's is getting the tailpiece mounted that takes some custom fab work.typically just a bracket bent up will suffice.

I bought a 2nd hand Harris 4into1. I dont know what model it was made for but the previous owner had welded on a mounting bracket to fit it on a GPZ750. I whacked that off and made a new bracket to fit my CSR. No problem.
The big problem came with the pipe fouling on the back brake pedal. I had to modify the pedal and reposition the footrest mounting bracket.
It was a real pain in the arse. Though my bike is a one off 'special' so I had the luxury of being able to move things around to where I wanted, you might not be able to do that on a 'standard. bike. Then again you might not have to.
Other things to think of,sometimes a replacement pipe will block your oil filter, meaning pulling off the pipe when you want to change the oil. Not a big deal,as it gives you a chance to clean the pipe properly (not a bad idea for a chromed mild steel pipe). Ive also heard that some pipes need the center stand removed.
If youre unsure, you should just phone V&H and ask them what they have to fit your model Also have a look at Delkevic.Ive heard good things about their pipes, a lot of people on the site have gone with them. (and theyre stainless steel and a pretty reasonable price). Try phoning them as well
Good luck

You can still get a new KERKER to fit an '82 LTD. Black only, no chrome.

...And a few different versions of the MAC, which is cheaper, but for a good reason - the classic "ya get what you pay for". I actually like the MAC header section, which is fairly good when done in the ceramic coatings they used to offer, but single MAC silencers are too restrictive on anything bigger than a 650.

I just bought a stainless Delkevic to mount to the same bike (LTD), but I haven't tried it yet. It has to be assembled like a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, so I already know I'm not going to enjoy putting it together....the individual pieces look pretty good sitting in the box, though, and it came with some nice decals for the bike and a baseball cap with their logo for the bike owner (not to replace a helmet while riding - safety first!).

The MAC and I believe the V&H allow easy oil changes.....the Kerker you might have to drop the complete exhaust to get to the filter, and if you don't want to drain the oil on to the pipes....

Lots of KZ1000 / 1100 4-1's will fit with a bit of ingenuity in mounting the collector and silencer sections - something most of the systems will need anyway....

About finishes on the exhaust - the only exhaust finishes that I've known to stand up to regular use has been chrome (and black chrome), MAC's black ceramic coating, and stainless steel (not just any stainless, either - some stainless alloys rust just as easily as regular mild steels).

All of the above have to be kept clean and the headers and silencers have to have 1/8" drain holes wherever water may collect in them (low points).

Painted pipes and coatings applied to used exhausts are about like taking a cruise across the North Atlantic Ocean in January - in a row boat.......

Thanks guys! I love this place. I am hopeful that at some point I can share some info that helps the others here in an effort to give back.
Damn shame about the kerker...
I remember the first time I heard a kz1000 with a kerker exhaust system (was VERY young ), it was our neighbour's bike.
Damn the old man was pist when I told him that it was cooler than his Norton 850 ' cause of the way it sounded.
I'm going to make some calls to distributors and see if any of them has a V&H that will work.
Any suggestions on running pods or stock air box with said exhaust?

The 1982 KZ1000 LTD came with CV type carbs. If you replace the stock air box and filter with pods plan on becoming a carb guru. ;) Ed

Yes, pods - don't do it....but there is a Dynojet Stage 3 kit available for the 82 LTD 1000 - it is not easy to drill Mikuni BS34 slides to install the kit, though!

I recommend you keep your stock air box and filter until you have some experience re-jetting, tuning, and setting / synchronizing carbs. Even then, I would still keep a large volume air plenum chamber (air box) of some kind on any bike. I am not a fan of running open (exposed) individual filters or velocity stacks at all. If you are looking at noticeable performance gains past a good stock tune by only switching to pods, good luck....

On Mikuni BS34's - Do NOT use the typical 54 mm cone type cheap pods (EMGO is one source of these, but there are many brands selling the exact same part) - they screw up the airflow around the vacuum ports for the slide diaphragms and your slides / needles / main jets won't operate properly. The engine will stumble through the mid range and won't pull at high rpm, and might not even rev to redline under load. The tapered oval style K&N's and the K&N style sold by APE work o.k., but if you are hoping for noticeable power increases, you won't get any until you switch to performance carbs or make other serious engine modifications....

Actually the newer Kerkers made by SuperTrapp aren't the same as the originals. They re-routed the pipes for easy oil/filter access, and no more springs at the head. Don't know if that hurt performance, but definitely more convenient, and they still look awesome!

Here's a good shot when mine were brand new. Chrome is discontinued. Found NOS on a shelf in Germany.
