Great profile shot...lots of interesting things going on there. Looks like the air box contains pod filters.

I tried keeping the outer box trim with the pods in the beginning, but it was too tight a fit and eventually removed it.

I've been quite an air box head lately.
Since you have it removed, is there any chance you could post a pic (of your air box) that highlights the modifications?

Nothing fancy. Just took off everything with a cutting wheel except the back and top (intake). regret removing the bottom section that covered the regulator.

Whoa dude!

Same air box! :)

Modified to enable use with Mikuni KRS velocity stacks, because the air box is approximately 1.625" too narrow in its original form. The configuration was set up to also accommodate Ramair foam filters which fit the stacks.

Yeah. I tried something similar with FCRs and K&N ovals. I just wanted to keep the chrome trim, but it was too tight and cut it off.

I posted a while back about K&N pods. Too much oil to be attached directly to a carb, Sucks it right out. I had trails of filter oil through the carbs which put a film of carbon on the pistons.

K&N is making me the same exact filter set, but with synthetic media. Better filtration, still more flow, washable, and no oil!

Pods definitely improved performance, but I prefer the protective air box enclosure for its functional and aesthetic qualities.
Velocity Stacks with a less-restrictive air box...that does it for me. :)

Funny. With the filters I ordered the new media should be red. I like that, matches the pin stripe on the tank and covers.

Quality pods, ones big enough to flow more than the stock filter, can indeed make more power. Just don't expect the difference to be enough to show your KZ1000 taillight to a GSXR! The downside to pods is bad weather, longevity, and the tuning issues.

I run individual K&N's on my mildly modified 81 CBX, and they work well, simplify carb and engine maintenance and bike washing, and look / sound great, but only for fair weather use. If I ever go touring on that bike ever again, I would re-install the stock air box and filter first.

My "hot rod" bikes all have "air boxes" - but not the stock ones (except my bone stock R1)...custom made and properly designed large volume plenums with tuned length / shape intake runners (internal velocity stacks, basically).

I think Kerker bought Suppertrapp, not the other way round. I have a new black Kerker that I was saving for my next project. I was told by the distributor the pipe has to come off for oil filter service...

The old Kerker system K 2 and K2S were great pipes for Kawasaki fours. Not very durable, but the look and sound are awesome. Plus the history with 80's AMA superbikes and Eddie Lawson...if you find one in good shape - maintain it well. They are getting extremely rare.
