KZ1000 exhaust sealing problem was created by westmiltonfab
I am in the process of putting my KZ back to stock and I am having a rough time with the stock exhaust. What is the best procedure ? I can not get the pipes to seat against the head. The flanges do not seam to pull the pipes forward to aid in the sealing process.
Thanks for your help.

New crush gaskets? What kind of pipes? Pics? They fit into a recess so it is possible to get them off center and not tighten down all the way. I had to double mine up for my V/H.

Make sure gaskets are not already stuck inside the head. Use new gaskets and make sure you have stocksplit collars rather than collars from an after market pipe. Some aftermarket pipes use collars that are a different length than the stock ones so they don't work properly with stock pipes. Ed

The used exhaust that I purchased had collars with it. I will use those. Thanks for the advice.

Not specific to your sealing issue, but a trick I used to make the actual installation easier...
Secure the split collars to the head pipe with a loop of safety wire at the collars flange end. There's usually a small gap between the collars to tuck the safety wire twist into. Remember to slide the finned retainer over the head pipe before wiring the collars.

Or use the time-honored masking tape technique, which will soon burn off.

The pipes are on thanks everyone. Now I am replacing pods with the stock air box and silencer. I cleaned and re jetted the carbs. Now my question is how the heck do I get that put back together? I did a Honda 550 once but I was a kid back then. Do I put the air box boots on first or after I get the carbs mounted?

Thanks in advance. I want to post pictures but I keep getting errors as they are too big.

Box in the frame with the boots then install the carbs.

Every boot at the same time? or focus on the more pliable air box boots first?
