Finally got the jugs back in and noticed that the tappet for the #3 exhaust valve was tight. Wouldn't rotate freely. This is the tappet closest to the repaired hole. I would like to pull this tappet and rehone the socket. Since it appears to have become slightly distorted. Any tips for removing the tappet short of drilling out the valve.

Either a good suction cup or I had to use a strong magnet once..... couldn't seem to grab it with pliers ..... always used a smaller weaker magnet for shim replacement but some say on here it will cause it to remain magnetised and maybe draw in shaving of metal but I'm not to worried about that. Mine had a small nick on the bore that I had to gently file down after APE replaced the guides.

Be careful about using a magnet on it if you plan to reuse the bucket. A magnet might somewhat magnetize it in which case any metallic sludge might tend to stick to it. If that was to happen it could accelerate wear on the bucket and/or cam lobe. Ed

due to having new valve seals and the generally crudiness of the engine, I am going to pull the valves and clean it it before putting it back on the bike. This is the last time it is coming off (I hope). I think I am going to cut off the valve and tap out the stem. using the spring to pull out the tappet. I don't want to be playing with this again.

Could be a sliver of metal. I wouldn't go that far. I had it happen and worked the lifter out little by little, cleaned it up good and slid it back in.

I use a strong magnet to pull the buckets and never had a problem or hint of a problem. Never a sign the buckets become magnetised (shims wont stick to inside without magnet on outsde) and no sign of metallic particles sticking.

It might be different if I stroked the bucket in the same direction with the magnet. As it is pulling a bucket is only necessary maybe once every couple of years

Tried channellocks to no avail, so I tacked a 6mm bolt onto it and had it out in a min. I saw the buckets are readily available on ebay so going to clean it up, use the old tappet to check it and put the new bucket in. See attached to see the final repaired hole. Put and insert in right away
