Pics? Might be able to reuse the rings. I'd give it a nice cross hatch to help them reseat. Valve guide seals at least. Lets see what you have to work with. B)

Looks like your rings weren't seating. Could be the guide seals too. Pis of the bores? Replace the seals and you can look at the valves.

I have the seals so that I can replace them.

Those are the stock rings. First time the jugs are off to my knowledge. Not sure what you mean by they're not seating. I see the top ring is sprung a little and is off center on the piston.

What should I be looking at when I pull the valves?

The clean ring around the tops of the pistons suggests to me they weren't seating. You're going to this much trouble, new rings would make sense. With 28k on the engine, you may have to have the valve and seats ground. Take them out and see.

Any leads on economical after market rings? I found some on eBay for all four that is the same price that Z1 sells 1 set of rings. I hadn't anticipated taking the jugs off and doing this...

For the price that I am looking at a set of rings from Partzilla or Z1enterprises, I could almost buy a big bore forseti big bore piston kit with rings; not that I am looking to bore out my engine. I just would like a source of rings that will meet my needs without costing an arm and a leg. I had torn it down just to keep it from leaking.

What are we talking a set of rings vs the piston kit? I suspect the kit will be inferior to the stock parts. Links?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationMost economical piston ring set I have found.

Look at this on eBay

Big bore piston set from the same company

Look at this on eBay

Machined die cast big bore piston kit

Please keep in mind my goal is a tight reliable engine but I doubt I will even get to 1k miles once it's together.

I took some other pictures of the existing rings from a top down angle. Please provide your observations but there appears to be seating grooves in the rings.

Z1E sold me rings for my Wiseco pistons at $12 a set. X 4 isn't a whole lot more than those cheap rings. 4 pistons complete with everything $500. I know the name and know the product. That set for under $400 not only is standard compression but are not forged ether.
If it were me, I'd use a feeler gauge on the rings in their lands to see if they're in spec. If the rings have wear marks, the pistons might still be good. New rings might save you a bundle. If new pistons and bore is called for, I'd get 10.25/1 Wiseco's. Take that advice and you won't regret it.

Steve,

Believe me I am very tempted to put in oversize higher compression pistons. I don't know how I would explain that purchase to my supportive wife who would prefer to spend that money on a GPS for the beemer....

I realize the foresti pistons don't hold any water to wiseco or mtc pistons.

I don't know how much can be divined from these pics of the jugs. I oiled them when I took them off to keep them from rusting.
