I have never heard of a 4 cylinder 1984 KZ750-LTD. You may want to check the frame number to see if it might be a 1983 model.

The leak appears to me to be a very common one. The tach drive has a seal, gasket, and o-ring that eventually will leak and will need to be replaced. The oil often runs down and all around making it look like a different problem. Take a look at the link below for part numbers. Ed

Ya it's a bit confusing for me to try and order parts, not May of these bikes left and not sure what crosses over. I am still not sure what its technical name is,as far as I can tell they were only sold in Canada. 1984 kz750ne Ltd shaft drive. Ok so it's only a seal and I don't have to worry about a piston ring or worse. Thanks for the help.

Isn't there a cam chain guide in the cylinder head cover on that engine? I've always thought that the cam chain tensioner had to be removed and reset when installing the head cover on those bikes in order to properly tension the chain. And if there was no gasket between the head cover and the head, wouldn't that effect the cam timing?

This is correct. The cam chain tensioner spring cap must be removed before installing the valve cover otherwise the cam chain will become over tensioned.

That model bike uses an electronic tach so I don't think you need to worry about a leaking tach drive gear. The smoke is most likely residual oil burning off.
