Has anyone successfully replaced valve oil seals with out removing the head? Suggestions for the best replacement seals? Thanks, Mark

In order to change the valve stem seals with the head installed you are going to have to create some sort of lever bar that allows you to depress the valve spring and remove the keepers.

Typically you would first move the cylinder you are working on to TDC on the compression stroke, then feed something like a piece of cotton rope in through the spark plug hole until the combustion chamber is filled. Next, hook up your lever arm device and compress the valve spring and remove the keepers. A guy on the GS Resources did this but it was a one off. Not common. And sorry, but I'm not sure how he created the tool.

Best to just pull the head and take care of anything else that is needed.

If compression is good, there is no reason to remove head, unless you want to do it for fun.

There's plenty of reasons to pull the head on a 30 year old bike.

The engine was just rebuilt. I had to go back to the machinist to have the valves tipped to regain clearance at the cam lobes. I believe he did not chamfer the edges of the valve stem and nicked a seal. I'd rather not have to purchase another head gasket, and was hoping to use a Lisle valve keeper removal and installation tool to replace the bad seal or seals and inspect the stems for burrs or other defects, Wasn't sure if there is sufficient clearance to use the tool, Mark

This is why your seals are bad. This tool damages valves and valves damage seals. Ask if your engine guy used the tool. If he did, you need new valves.

HORSE HOCKEY. If a tool like that was used then all work is suspect. The best way is to remove the head and do all the seals. Valves should be inspected too.

The Lisle tool has not been used. I am asking if anyone has used it. I believe I will just go ahead and remove the head and replace the seals in the usual fashion. Thank you for all of your comments. Mark
