They kinda glue themselves together. Separating them and oiling them might do the trick.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just a quick update,:
Replaced clutch springs as new ones were available at my local dealer.
Changed oil to Castrol 4 T as recommended by a fellow GPZ owner
Soaked friction plates in the new oil for 3 days prior to installing
Adjusted the clutch mechanism ( clockwise, anticlockwise - who knows !!, this must be the most confusing adjustment ever in the history of motorcycles)

It's definetely better, when the engine/ oil is cold it's really good, once everything warms up it still grabs a bit but it's an improvement.

Just a small point, just check the clutch cable is the correct part number and not a cheap replacement the cable only needs to be a touch to long and you will not be able to pull it in completely even with full adjustment

Did you see this link? I have the same motor in one of my bikes, and the clutch adjustment is very simple once you know what's going on.
