Splitting the case, and other woes was created by rokit_armor
Where to begin. That fancy rubber gasket around the timing chain, between the block and head, has been leaking like a seive so i finally decided to rebuild the motor. ~2500 on this build, granted it was rebuilt in '93. Already replaced a few rotted rubber parts, but this one I said to heck with it i'll just get the motor done. Tore most of it down so far, finding really fun stuff along the way! all the exhaust cam bearing cap holes have stripped out, with a few of the bolts actually breaking as well. The output shaft snapped at the end-where the nut attaches. One of the pistons managed to lose a tail. Now I can't seem to split the case, Can anyone identify what I'm missing to remove? Gone through the service manual and don't see anything i'm missing, is it possible the case has just hardened together? looks like liquid gasket was used between the two case halves.

And the fun stuff I found in the oil pan. Oh, that's where the piston piece went!

All covers come off. Get all the 10mm hex bolts top and bottom. More pics will help. The early cases have 10mm threaded holes for splitting. Two in front and one in the back. Don't try to split them until you're sure all bolts are out.

I've pretty much pulled every bolt I can see. Hopefully these help.

Why haven't you taken off the ignition cover? Follow the case seam all the way around. If you miss one bolt, you can ruin the cases.

BTW, I use one piece head gaskets. I bought some from a well known supplier and the O ring started leaking in 3 months. NEVER again. Check my Good Guys thread for gaskets.

This was the only thing I couldn't remove, had to drill out the screws holding on the timing plate as it was... But it is not attached to the case so it shouldn't matter.

It IS attached. There are two locating pins top and bottom. What's on the other side?

Is this a shaft engine? I think I see something else attached to it. Take off the spark advance with a 12mm wrench and the cover.

SWEST, I plan on using a one-piece gasket. If there's one thing I've learned from this forum it's that! I just can't seem to get the ignition portion off the crank, and I don't want to break anything further. With it unbolted from the case it should be OK just floating with the crank. I can't find any additional bolts, other than the two in the center position but they appear to not be attached to the case.

You have to take it and the spark advance off. Use a rubber mallet on it and the cases. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Yeah, it's a shaftie, I could be wrong, but the nut holding in the advance assembly appears to be notched, i don't want to break that.

That's why I said 12mm wrench. The larger nut is for turning the crank. Another better shot of the other side? That main crank cap stays on.
