Valve gap still not in spec after shim swap

I was switching out the shims because alot of the valves literally had no gap at all. Keep in mind I swapped out the head because the other one was damaged. Not mechanically but physically. So anyways I followed the kz650 valve gap chart and it's still not in spec. They do have a gap now but not enough. They're like .06 or .07. Not the .08-.18 as specified. I mean obviously I would just have to go down another size but maybe I measured wrong or read the graph wrong.

It's not unusual to have to move two shim sizes if the engine has been neglected. Hopefully the valves and seats are not permanently damaged from the neglect.

If you had no gap then you had no idea how tight they were so all you can do is add something to give a gap which becomes your new start point.

I had the same thing. I set them large. 500 miles later two had to be adjusted again.

This is the reason you should always have a very thin 2.00 to 2.20 shim in your parts bag so you can stick a KNOWN thin shim thickness in place of those that have zero gap.... measure the too wide of a gap with the thin shim, look at your chart, then decide what shim is needed to get the gap at around .002"-.004".
Really kinda Z1 "Engine Maintenance Tune Up" 101 in my honest opinion.

Isn't .002 or .004 too small of a gap though?

If you have zero gap, you don't know if the valve is closed and seated, therefore you can only guess a the size of the "minus gap" that exists in that situation. When you go to a thinner shim the amount you pick, it could, in theory, still leave you with no gap.
