Especially on the 650's with the under bucket shims, it's not a job for the faint hearted and many never felt the need to pay someone to do it. Once the engine is broken in and has some miles on it the valve clearances usually change very little, but I wonder how many bikes out there have never had the valves adjusted including the first time they should have been checked?

Sometimes I feel that knowledge can also be a bad thing. you can get so paranoid about everything that might need adjusting, what can go wrong and what sort of loads hogging the red line might cause that you can't enjoy riding the thing any more . Sometimes I wish I was 18 again, where even though I was big on maintenance, once in the saddle I never gave those things another thought - two throttle positions - closed and wide open

routine maintenance we see it when it don't start.
I do the big commercial mowers and they get the maintenance
because I do it when their in for other issue's.
A lot of the equipment I work on I've work on for year's and know when it need's it so
I just do it and add it on the work order.

Mine is an '83 and not restored or rebuilt so I'm reluctant to "push it" too far. Thats slightly over 5,000 RPM in 5th gear
I'm fortunate in that the previous owner had everything wired-tight, as it were. 4,000 miles later and she still runs smooth.
Ive cleaned the air filter 1x (it didnt need it) and I change the oil every 2K miles. I recently lubed the clutch cable.

That would be my experience with mine also at altitude, it's pretty low geared with the stock gearing and so hitting 80 is easy enough with seemingly plenty in hand. Just running it up through the gears can get you to a good speed, like most of my bikes going too fast is usually my problem, certainly since 1978 when I stopped riding a Honda 175

Possible loose main jet(s).
Perhaps the main jets have been "drilled out." :pinch:
