Clutch rod seal ?

I have tracked down my latest oil leak.. This time it's coming from the clutch rod seal under engine cover. I'm guessing inside diameter of maybe ,1/2 to 3/4". When I took clutch cable holder off of rod, seal basically came off shaft on its own.. I've never seen a seal that didn't have some press on it.. Anyone ever replace one of these that can speak on it ? I'll try to get a pic but my phone doesn't seem to want to load them to forum.

Maybe it's pic but the case where seal mounts looks buggered up. You can get the seal might need adhesive or epoxy of some type to keep it put and leak free. That looks like a shaft output unit? Not too familiar with it but the seal area looks bad.

Seal mount is ok just loose fit. I was trying to hold flashlight. I was thinking same. Likely some rtv around outside of seal.

Try pulling the push rod out and reinsert the opposite end into the motor ;)

The rod gets worn where it passes through the seal from years of use and crud buildup, flipping the rod over puts it in a differant location .
Ive fixed more than one leak this way. ;)

The seal I got in the kit I bought didn't have the metal core like the rest of them so when I pushed it in, it came out the other side. I put it in with both sides having a lip. That way when it gets hot the lips will swell and make there own keepers. I was tempted on using crazy glue or something but it wasn't needed. The old one was loose so I used JB weld on the inside to hold it in place. That worked for two years. I've cleaned and turned around my push rods for years but I need a new one. Both ends are scored.

Guess I wasn't thinking about it leaking between seal and shaft as much as I was wondering why seal didn't fur any more snug than it does. I didn't notice any scoring on rod. This seal doesn't have a metal shell like most other seals I have seen.

That white stuff around the seal recess in the case looks like a pile of corroded aluminum, like it was eaten away where the seal was supposed to be pressed in. Na, can't be...

I had the front bevel gear case off twice this year, to service the leaking cover gasket first, and the worn-through broken clutch push-rod the second time. Both times were a pita, btw.

You can NOT service the related parts of the clutch release mechanism without removing the whole bevel-gear case from the engine, plain and simple. There is a tiny O-ring seal on the threaded adjustment rod shaft, only accessible from the back side. It can't be removed from outside, because the threads end along the shaft before the the O-ring. That tiny 30+ year old O-ring was letting oil pass.

IMO, the simplest solution for the shaft seal would be to bed it in some type of hardening-goop to secure it in the case, but just enough to fix ONLY the seal perimeter in-place, just enough to make up for the lost aluminum around it. This would serve as a temporary fix, until you resolve to remove the unit from the engine, to either replace the whole thing or properly rework the seal opening.

The poor condition of the case.. Is a trick of light from having to hold flashlight on area. I can assure you the case where rod goes in is like new.. With oil on it from leak..

My only question is why does seal come out so easy? I'm assuming it should have some sort of press fit and not basically fall out.

It may not matter, but I think you have the seal facing backwards in your photo.
