It may not matter, but I think you have the seal facing backwards in your photo.

I found the same thing the other day on my 1100 shaft. I got a new seal and its all rubber like the one that was in it. When I put the new seal in I coated the outside edge with a sealer when I put it back.

Im guessing your pushrod is the same as an 84 1100,is it differant on one end from the other?

As dave pointed out. You have to remove bevel gear to access rod. On mine the rod is internal. Only part that touches seal is rot ating part.

It's not like a chain drive.

Still workin on it but I don't see why it won't work
