My only question is why does seal come out so easy? I'm assuming it should have some sort of press fit and not basically fall out.
It may not matter, but I think you have the seal facing backwards in your photo.

I found the same thing the other day on my 1100 shaft. I got a new seal and its all rubber like the one that was in it. When I put the new seal in I coated the outside edge with a sealer when I put it back.

As dave pointed out. You have to remove bevel gear to access rod. On mine the rod is internal. Only part that touches seal is rot ating part.

Make sure to only use the Genuine Kawasaki seal part number 92049-1037
