I have an 81 Kz750h that needs a new head gasket and valve cover gaskets, and and 82 Kz750h that has recently started to leak oil from the base and possibly head gasket.

I did a few searches online and found a few different options, so I decided to check in with you guys before I buy anything. When it comes to gaskets, Is there any particular brand I should be looking for, and are there brands I should stay far away from?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationOEM Kawasaki gaskets and seals is what I recommend. The head gaskets can get spendy, but you can find good deals on ebay.

Ok, I've checked out that head gasket on flebay a few times. It just looked a little odd to me

Kawasaki revised the head gasket a bunch of times over the years. That one with the red stuff on it is basically same as your original head gasket only Kawasaki added red RTV on it to help improve the oil tightness. I bought one of those gaskets and installed it on my engine a couple weeks ago. No experience beyond that but as long as you purchase a real Kawasaki gasket, you should be fine.

One thing I learned when shopping for gaskets is that Kawasaki merged the 650 gaskets together with the 750 gaskets, with the 750 being the default. The bore hole size is bigger, which apparently works just fine with the smaller engine. I'm not sure what would happen if you purchased a 650 gasket, with the smaller bore hole, and installed it on a later 750. My guess is it wouldn't hurt anything, but I made the effort to purchase the larger gasket just to be safe.

I put a 903 one piece head gasket on my 1015. I don't and won't tolerate leaks. I was concerned the ring might glow and cause preignition. No problems. This time around I bought the 72mm gasket. No problems. I could have gotten the 70mm but I wanted to see what the difference would be. Next will be the one piece copper gasket. It will be a while.

PB blaster, a torch, and some vice grips. Heat the stud good and hot and hit it with the sauce. It may take a few cycles but it will come out. Try not to snap it off.

Turns out one of the spark plugs was cross threaded a few times. I did some research and now I'm confused. Helicoil, time insert or just retap, what is the proper way to fix the problem?

I'd try and chase the threads first, if no, Heli coil it.

I think Timeserts are superior to helicoils for that application, assuming chasing the threads fails.

best way to get the broke stud out is to weld a nut on it the heat will swell the stud then free it when it cools
plus you then can use a socket to remove it.
Find a nut that will slide over the stud slide it to the head and mark the stud flush with nut the
remove nut and cut the stud between the mark and head put the nut over the stud and fill the
hole with weld let cool a few min. and the stud will come right out.

As for the plug hole don't waist time chasing or a helicoil use a timesert
helicoils are not ment for a thread that will see a lot of remove/replace of the bolt
like a plug will.

1980 KZ650 F1
ZX750A1 motor.
Wiseco 810cc kit.
Zukiworks racing ported head.
VM 29 smooth bore's.
Dyna 2000 Ign. w/Dyna mini coil's
APE cylinder stud's and nut's.
APE valve spring's.
APE Track King clutch.
V/H KZ1000 sidewinder.
3.5x18 laced to a KZ1000 disk hub.
150/60/18 Shinko 006 Podium.

I said a few prayers, sprayed some PB blaster on it let it sit for about 30min then slowly tried to unscrew it with a baby set of vice grips.

It came right out didn't damage the threads at all! I had a blow torch ready, but didn't need it.

Now, the only scary thing left to do is the spark plug hole. Then it is just cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning![IMG][/img]
